Glenrothes 2s get the better of Largo in soggy 20/20 encounter

Brent Bentley8 Jun - 16:06

Miles and Brown again the standouts as 2nd XI fall to home defeat

After a rain abandoned game last weekend, Largo 2s managed to just avoid further rain to get in their game on Saturday vs Glenrothes 2nd XI at East Drive. Gareth Miles was again in charge of the Largo side and his team fielded first in a game shortened to 20 overs a side to avoid further forecast rain later in the afternoon.

Largo opened the bowling with father and son Stuart and Innes Macdonald and it was Macdonald junior who got the first wicket for Largo, bowling Rathore for 10. Glenrothes were moving along well towards 50 before Eilidh MacLeod made the breakthrough removing Burton for 13, caught by Innes. Soon after Miles brought himself in to the attack and showed his abilities again with the ball that have made him top wicket taker in the league so far this season as he took 3 wickets in his 4 overs removing Tawheedi for 15 before removing Culleton (5) and Rowcliffe (0) in short order, Glenrothes 64/5.

Largo though were short of their usual bowling depth on the day and despite both MacLeods in the match combining for Ewan to get a wicket caught by Eilidh, the visitors were able to accelerate well at the end of the innings through Ullah (27no) and Le Roux (11no) to finish on 116/6 off their 20 overs.

In reply, Largo opened with Sayer and S MacDonald but the later would go quickly for just 1. Sayer unfortunately would fall soon after for 5 before a welcome return after many years to former 2nd XI captain Alan Tocher was short lived with the bat as he was adjudged LBW for just 1, Largo 14/3 in 7 overs.

Ian Brown though along with captain Miles would lead a recovery with Ian looking in the same fine form he has been in all season which has now taken his league average to above 100 for 2025 manipulating the ball around the field and putting away anything loose for 4. However by the time Miles was dismissed for 18 there was far to much for the home side to do, and despite debutant Paterson getting his first runs for the club the home side fell to a 32 run defeat, Brown 37 not out.

Largo will be happy to have got a game completed in the conditions but will be disappointed to end up on the wrong side of the result again. Their next match is a rematch back in Glenrothes in 2 weeks time.
