Record 2nd XI partnership from Rintoul and Bentley the highlight as Largo fall agonisingly short again at East Drive

Record 2nd XI partnership from Rintoul and Bentley the highlight as Largo fall agonisingly short again at East Drive

Brent Bentley6 Jul - 08:26

160 between the pair with Rintoul's 84 the main contribution as Largo fall 8 runs short in run chase.

Largo 2s welcomed Kinloch 3s to East drive hoping to go one better after last weeks low scoring 1 wicket defeat. Brent Bentley was back as captain for the home side and after winning the toss his side took to the field first.

Largo opened with Collinson and Konig looking for early wickets and after a good start from the visitors Konig got a deserved wicket as Habib drove to Tocher in the covers to take the catch for 13. Soon after however the game would end in painful fashion for Tocher as he took a ball to the eye and had to go off to hospital. Continuing with 10 Largo managed to rally in the field as 2 runs outs, thanks to Collinson and Konig removed Khurshid (17) and Miah (31) with Murdo Duncan also taking a wicket thanks to a catch from Collinson.

The partnership though of Khalid and Kahn would change the momentum of the game to the visitors. Against the spinners especially in the Largo attack both looked to be aggressive and managed to find the gaps in the field mixed in with some big hits using the strong cross breeze to their advantage. Konig would return to the attack to break the partnership bowling Khan for 41 but Khalid would remain and move the score past 200.

Rintoul in his long-awaited return to Largo colours would come back to take 2 wickets thanks to catches by A.Duncan and Macleod before Khalid would finally fall LBW to Bentley for 72. The Dundee side however by this point had moved to a dominant 227 in their 40 overs.

In reply, Largo opened with Bentley and Rintoul and after starting slowly the pair hit their stride, with Rintoul especially moving past some early rust to find his timing and the boundary whenever anything loose was bowled to him. The pair would continue on toward mid innings drinks unbeaten and with the score on 102, what seemed an unassailable target at the start looked in touch for the home side.

Rintoul after the break would move to a deserved 50 as he continued to put the pressure on the visitors attack as he showed the hitting ability that he has always possessed and looked set to reach a potential maiden hundred in his comeback. Bentley would also move past his 50 and in doing so the pair moved the score to 156, breaking the record for the highest ever partnership for Largo 2nd XI.

The record partnership however would stop at 160 as Bentley looking to continue to push the score along spooned a catch up to Khurshid to fall for 52 before next over Rintoul would also fall missing a delivery from Bowman to go for an entertaining 84.

Largo though still were in with a chance of victory with A.Duncan and Brown left to chase the remaining runs and Brown managed to immediately pick up from where Rintoul left off as he moved the score along with consistent boundaries including a well struck 6 to mid-wicket to take the score past 200 with 4 overs to go. Khalid though would follow up his first innings runs to dismiss Brown stumped for 37 before Duncan would be dismissed unluckily run out at the bowlers end for 14, leaving largo requiring 12 off the last over for victory.

The task though would prove too much for Konig and MacLeod despite their best efforts as the pair managed just 4 to consign Largo to another hard luck narrow loss this time by just 8 runs.

After a tough first innings the record partnership from Rintoul and Bentley turned the game in to one of the more memorable this season, but the Largo side overall will be glad to have made the game so competitive in the end. Largo are back on the road next week as they travel to league Leaders Broomhall.
