King Stars as Largo 2nds Win Again

Fresh from their victory last Saturday, Largo 2nd XI travelled to play unbeaten Morton 2nd XI at the meadows, depleted in numbers but still hopeful of pulling off an unlikely win. Captain Sneddon naturally lost the toss and the opposition captain chose to bat on what was always a bowling pitch – a decision akin to Ricky Ponting’s at Edgbaston in 2005 or Nasser Hussain’s at the Gabba in 2003. It was just the start Largo were looking for.
King and Mowat opened the bowling and kept it tight with Mowat getting the breakthrough, bowling Morton’s opener, Amis, with an excellent delivery in the final over of his spell. Wickets continued to fall consistently throughout Morton’s innings. This was due to excellent bowling from Chris Baddeley and Ben Coates taking 7 wickets between them, backed up by excellent fielding and, in particular, from Ronnie Filsell taking 2 good catches behind the stumps. Sneddon took the final 2 wickets built from pressure created by youngster Louis Baddeley and Morton were bowled out for 88. This was precarious total due to the poor batting pitch, meaning Largo would have to bat well to chase it down.
Mowat and Chris Baddeley opened the batting and fared well against Morton’s opening bowlers, who were their main strike force. Both batsmen ticked the score along nicely before Chris Baddeley was out to a good return catch from the bowler, Nagpal. This brought Simon King to the crease and he and Mowat put on 10 before Mowat fell trying to push the score on. King continued to score relatively fluently on a poor batting track back up by Sneddon putting on 43 run partnership before Sneddon fell to the opening bowler who was brought back on to “make things happen”. King was joined at the crease by Ben Coates and they batted sensibly towards the total before a restless Mowat, longing for the pub, asked them to get a move on! This prompted King to hit 2 fours and then finished the game with a glorious 6 all in the same over!
It was a superb team performance in the field and a well-executed run chase, particularly from, man of the match, Simon King who finished unbeaten on 46. Largo 2nd XI are up to 4th in the table and will be hoping for a similar performance at home against Dunnikier 2nd XI next weekend.
