RECORD STAND NOT ENOUGH TO SEE A LARGO WIN.

On Saturday Largo's 1st.XI cricketers travelled to a sun-drenched Inverleith Park, Edinburgh in hopes of reversing their 130 run defeat earlier in the season at the hands of Drummond Trinity. With last week's centurion Hughes Gillin and inform opening batsman Andy Warrender in the team Largo skipper Scott had to be fairly optimistic that the team could chase down any score the home side set them Trinity having won the toss and electing to bat.

With a batter friendly wicket and a lightening fast outfield keeping the score in check was going to be difficult but Largo got off to a good start with Rintoul and Scott both bowling tightly the latter picking up the first of his 3 wickets in his first spell. With Rintoul removing Nagi and Gillin having the dangerous Balil caught by Blake for 38 this brought together Awan and Nasir with the score on 56 for 3. This partnership added 93 runs in 16 overs before Scott returning for a second spell had Awan stumped by wicket-keeper Warrender for 41 and the score on 149 for 4 after 31 overs. Asim soon followed, bowled Scott, as the Edinburgh team tried to pile on the runs in the final overs. Wickets then fell at regular intervals most importantly that of Nasir(59) bowled by Bob Mowat in a remarkable spell of 4.4 overs which saw the veteran take 5 wickets for 26 runs - 3 bowled, a stumping by Warrender and a steepling catch taken by Scott.

Drummond Trinity finished on 208 all out and Mowat with his "5fer" the pick of the bowlers. With more runs to chase than Largo would have wished given the conditions 5 runs per over was not an impossible target.

Choosing to open with the Warrender brothers, the steady innings-building Andy and the big hitting Stevie, Largo hoped to lay a solid foundation for their innings. Hopes were dashed however when Andy was "yorked" by Mareddy for 3 and Stevie was caught from the bowling of Kuchadi for 4. Worse was to follow and any remote hopes of a win seemed gone and an embarrassing defeat likely as the score plummeted to 42 for 5 in 15 overs with Gillin(8), McGilvary(8) and Mowat(10) all also falling to Kuchadi.

Murray Sneddon and Nicky Rintoul however didn't seem to have read the same script as the early batsmen as they set about building a 103 run partnership which included only 9 boundaries and therefore a lot of hard running between the wickets. As the pair seemed to score of every ball the Edinburgh side clearly started to worry that Largo might just pull off a remarkable victory. This wasn't to be as Rintoul was bowled by Nasir for 43 and Sneddon was bowled for 62 by Mareddy who had "yorked" Warrender in a similar fashion at the start of the innings. Both Sneddon and Rintoul batted extremely well the former playing some delightful sweep shots to the spinner and they well merit setting a new record for a Largo 1st.XI sixth wicket partnership a record which has stood since 2006(78 - A. Duncan & C. Barclay).

Despite the efforts of Blake, Brown and Allan the Largo innings finished 26 runs short of the target, While not gaining 20 points for an improbable win Largo at least came away from the match with maximum batting and bowling points(10) which keeps them well clear of the bottom of the Division 2 table. On Saturday the Firsts are at home to Westquarter and Reading.
