On Saturday buoyed by their first win of the season the previous weekend Largo's 1st.XI cricketers travelled to Inch Park, Edinburgh to play league leaders Edinburgh South. With threatening skies overhead and damp ground conditions Largo's captain Rintoul did not hesitate in deciding to field when he won the toss. Opening the bowling Scott and A.Brown got Largo away to a good start with Scotts swing and Browns pace reducing "South" to 23 for 2 after 8 overs with Scott claiming the wickets of the opening batsmen.
Marais and Toomey however dug in and moved the score along to 85 in the 27th. over before the classy Marais, the leagues top scorer, was inexplicably run out by his partner - a lucky break for Largo. As the storm clouds gathered the home side pushed on to 147 for 6 with Barclay removing Toomey, caught Scott for 20 and Brown having the hard-hitting Menon caught behind by Warrender for 34 and Sheikh caught by Scott for 1. At this point the heavens opened and a downpour which saw the end of most cricket in Edinburgh drove the players to take an early tea in the clubrooms. The rain cleared, the covers were taken off and play resumed with Edinburgh South finishing on 160 for 6 from their 40 overs..
Although this was a decent bowling performance and there was no lack of commitment in the field Largo lacked the penetration of H.Gillin and the nagging line and length of Bentley which they had had the previous week when both were available. Scott was the pick of the bowlers taking 2 wickets for 23 runs in his 8 over spell
With a slow outfield due to the rain chasing 160 was never going to be easy but the Largo cause could not have got off to a worse start with 4 wickets down for 14 runs in the 9th.over. Mowat(0) and B.Coates(0) both trapped LBW by Marais, as good a bowler as he is a batsman, and Rintoul(0) and Brown(4) bowled by Sheikh.
An embarrassing wipe-out looked on the cards.but Warrender and Barclay showed great grit and determination in stemming the fall of wickets. In the face of excellent bowling the pair got to drinks(20 overs) without further loss although only 37 was on the board. While Barclay went for 10 shortly after the drinks break Warrender found good support from John Robertson(15) and Murray Snedden(10no) as he saw Largo to a respectable 101 for 6 after 40 overs. Warrender finished on a highly creditable and confidence building 43 not out - hopefully a return to the form which seemed to have deserted him for much of the season.
Although a defeat positives can be taken from the match by a Largo team which saw 5 changes from the previous week - great endeavour in the field, continuing good team spirit, a return to form by Warrender and solid contributions by the middle order.batting. Largo are at home to Livingston on Saturday. Match ball sponsors were JY Thomson, Leven.
