While Saturdays cricket programme was wiped out by rain dry overnight conditions and East Drives tremendous wicket allowed play to go ahead on Sunday in Largo 1st..XIs second scheduled match of the weekend. Eastern Knights, a development team, drawn from the best of Edinburgh and Lothians young cricketers were the visitors for what was a must win match for Largo in their battle to avoid relegation.
Asked to bat by Knights captain Aslam Largo made slow but steady progress with Warrender and D. Coates blunting the Knights attack seeing off the opening bowlers Khan and Sadler. Coates(6) however fell to the first ball of first change bowler Thomsons spell with Largo on 36 for 1 after 11 overs. Batting up the order H.Gillins poor run of form was exposed when he too was bowled by the dangerous Thomson for 3 bringing skipper for the day Rintoul to the crease. Struggling to curb his usual exuberant style of play Rintoul with Warrender added 17 runs before Rintoul was bowled by Miller and Largo in trouble. With a resolute Warrender holding firm B.Coates, in the face of some excellent bowling, decided to hit himself and Largo out off trouble signaled by hitting spinner Ross for a huge six. While he added three further boundaries the inevitable happened with Coates caught for 23 from the spin of Aslam and Largo on 96 for 4. Galloways "golden duck" saw this become 96 for 5 with Warrender on 47.
I.Brown and Warrender were building a useful partnership when Brown was run out by Khan for 10.with the score on 119. Perhaps unsettled by the run out Warrenders 132 minute sojourn at the crease was to end when he was bowled by Ross for 52 and the score still on 119. Robertson and Bentley went cheaply with Robertson stumped from the bowling of Aslam and a surprised Bentley adjudged run out by the umpire. A last wicket stand of 24 by Scott(16no) and J.Gillin(1) saw Largo to 154 all out in 48 overs and 3 batting points secured.
With a heavy shower clearing during the tea interval the Knights openers Miller and Evans put on 48 runs in good time before left-hander Evans was caught by Rintoul from the bowling of Bentley for 25. For the addition of eight runs Acheson(4) and Anderson(0) fell to LBW decisions giving Largo some hopes of a major breakthrough but this was not to be as Miller and Aslam steadied the Knights innings. With the score on 128 for 3 after 26 overs play had to be abandoned as a drenching downpour
soaked the wicket and players. Miller had scored 73 not out having been dropped by Rintoul when he was on 18 and Aslam had scored 20 not out. A rain calculator result gave the win to Knights by 69 runs.
Largo were well beaten by a side which were more than competent in all aspects of the game - tight bowling, solid batting and sharp fielding while Largo fell short particularly in getting runs on the board.
