On a glorious day at Meigle Park, Galashiels Largo's 1sts. went down to an 8 wicket defeat. Having beaten Gala earlier in the season the Largo side should have looked forward to the match with a degree of confidence. This was tempered however with the knowledge that the availability problems which have dogged the season were again going to have an bearing with regular players missing.
Winning the toss and batting first skipper Asman Ali and Andy Warrender formed an excellent opening partnership putting on 70 runs in 18 overs. After making a sound 36 Ali, to his horror and disappointment of the Largo support, was caught from the bowling of the wily off-spinner Crooks. Naveen Getti clearly trying to reign in his usual belligerent approach helped see Largo to 111 before providing Patterson with his second catch and Moir with a wicket. The bad luck number - 111 or "Nelson" - seemed to jinx Largo as Warrender having completed an accomplished 50 fell to the bowling of Mein and Largo on 115 for 3.
With no specialist batsmen to follow there was always a chance of a collapse if one of the top order didn't bat through and so it was to prove with only A.Brown(22) and Scott(15) making any significant addition to the score. Largo did however bat out their 50 overs and gained 4 batting points when they finished on 175 for 9.
While Robertson bowled a tight opening spell Gillin struggled with his length and Gala openers S. and J. Halls, father and son, made steady progress before first change bowler A.Brown had Halls Jnr. caught behind by Warrender for 15. Brown and Baddeley slowed the run-rate with Brown picking-up a second wicket when he held a return catch to dismiss Halls Snr. for a fine 50.
At drinks Gala were 73 for 2 while Largo had been 93 for 1. Gala however had batting in depth with Millar and Ormiston accelerating the scoring as the Largo bowlers tired. Millar scored an impressive 72no while Ormiston scored 37no neither offering much in the way of chances to the bowlers as Gala reached the required total in 42.4 overs.
Despite the margin of the Gala win the Largo team performed well with the limited batting resources available and the lack of variety in the bowling department.
