Largo Cricket Club's 1st.XI faced a very challenging start to the season when they made the long trip down to the Borders to play the highly regarded St.Boswells. Until the recent reorganisation of Scottish cricket St.Boswells were mid - ESCA Division 1: Largo were mid-ESCA Division 2.
Already affected by player availability problems Largo were dealt an additional blow midway through the St.Boswells innings when bowler and opening batsman, Nicky Rintoul, hit the deck with a pulled hamstring having bowled only 2 of a potential 10 overs. Rintoul will clearly be out for a lengthy spell.
Largo skipper Gordon Kinnear had won the toss and invited St.Boswells to bat. The Borders team plundered some early loose bowling and rocketed along with Young and Glover putting on 61 before the steady Andy Robertson had Young caught behind by Kinnear for 45 in the 11th. over. There was no respite for the Largo attack when Broom came to the wicket hitting 11 "fours" and 4 "sixes" including a huge blow which cleared two adjacent houses and could not be found! A stand of 107 with overseas amateur Williams took St.Boswells past 200 and Broom to 99 before being bowled 1 short of a well merited century by Hughes Gillin. St. Boswells innings closed on 253 for 9 from their 50 overs.
When Rintoul limped off in the 29th.over St.Boswells without hesitation offered a replacement fielder - sportsmanship at it's best.In fact one of the sustitute fielders ended up with a "sair" finger making a stop!
Robertson and Brent Bentley both bowled well but the bowling plaudits have to go to debutant U15 Aidan Brown. Having bowled an economic 6 over spell for 24 Aidan returned to take 4 wickets for 10 runs in 3 overs including 3 wickets in one over.
To chase 253 with the reduced resources Largo had was always going to be difficult if not impossible. Despite the best efforts of everyone in the reshuffled order to dig in only Asman Ali(25) and skipper Kinnear(11) reached double figures against a potent St.Boswells attack. Largo were 71 all out in 36 overs.
On Saturday Largo 1sts. face St.Boswells arch rivals Gala at East Drive, Upper Largo..
