Having lost heavily to Gala in Galashiels earlier in the season Largo's cricketers knew that they were going to have a struggle on their hands when the Borders team played at East Drive on Saturday.
Promotion certainties Gala won the toss and asked Largo to bat on a dull, overcast day with the ball likely to swing.
Largo could not have got off to a worse possible start with openers Rintoul and skipper Kinnear back in the pavilion with 14 balls bowled and zero on the scoreboard.
Warrender and Brown dug in and while scoring slowly at least slowed a Gala juggernaut which looked like it would sweep Largo aside. With the score on 17 in the 12th. over Brown was very unlucky to be given out "caught behind" with the batsman and home supporters convinced the ball had hit pad not bat.
By drinks(25 overs) the score had reached 45 but at the loss of a further 2 wickets with N.Ali(4) and Rajagopal(0)both falling to Pringle. Anderson showed some resistance but fell to Crooks bringing Gillin to the crease.
Deciding to play his shots Gillin kindled home hopes of at least reaching a 100 as he hit a series of "fours" from Ormiston. Unfortunately the obdurate innings of Warrender was to end with the score on 76 and break what was developing into a productive partnership. Warrender ground out a very creditable 33 from 109 balls when all around him were falling. With little support from the usually "wagging tail" Gillin finished on 29 not out scoring at just under a run/ball. Largo all out for 85.
As ever Largo's bowlers really bent their backs in an effort to defend such a small total and when Bentley and Robertson bowled Halls and Irvine in consecutive overs there was some hope in the Largo ranks. However while Bentley bowled Miller with the score on 46 for 3 in the 16th. over Ormiston and Crooks saw the visitors through to a comfortable 7 wicket win.
Perhaps it was an omen of good fortune for the Borders club that the music from the local gala drifted over East Drive throughout the afternoon. Unfortunately the visitors did not take up the offers made on the public address system to go and buy burgers!
