On Saturday(03/08/13)Largo 1sts. traveled through to West Lothian to face struggling Fauldhouse Victoria who, since their return from the national leagues, have not been the cricketing force they once were. Nevertheless Largo expected a closely contested match on the green, damp wicket which had seen a lot of rain during the previous week.
Winning an all important toss Largo captain Asman Ali asked Fauldhouse to bat. Opening with lower order batsman , Danny Law, as a blocker at one end it was clear that Fauldhouse wanted to see off the Largo attack of Robertson and H.Gillin. While he negotiated 15 scoreless balls successfully Law was bowled by Gillin in the fourth over heralding a collapse on a scale which the current 1st.XI will not have experienced in league cricket before.
Bowling good line and length on the unpredictable, slow wicket Gillin and Robertson had 6 Fauldhouse batsmen back in the pavilion in a 12 over spell which saw only 16 runs scored. H.Gillin took 4 wickets for 7 runs , 3 clean bowled and one to a diving catch by Scott. Robertson had Tomkin "play on" to his wicket and Culquhoun fall to a well judged catch by J. Gillin.
There was no respite for Fauldhouse when Gillin was replaced by the league's top wicket-taker Ryan Brown who took the remaining 4 wickets at the cost of 5 runs with Haigh(0) the final wicket to fall caught and bowled.
Fauldhouse 39 all out in 23.4 overs.
With dark clouds above Largo were keen to turn around and bat without any break for drinks or tea. Captain Ali and Rintoul opened confidently with the knowledge that there was only a target of 40 to reach. With Rintoul playing in his usual flamboyant style(30 not out: 5 "fours") Largo knocked off the runs required in 8.4 overs for the loss of Ali's
wicket.
Had Largo lost the toss and batted first or Fauldhouse been more positive in their approach then the result may have been different. Who knows - such is cricket. Next week at East Drive Largo face much stiffer opposition in the form of potential division champions Gala.
