On Saturday Largo's first team welcomed Heriots 2nds to East Drive on a glorious sunny day. Heriots captain Case won the toss and decided to bat on what looked a good batting track. Largo struck early with Bentley getting one to swing back trapping Singh with the score on 14. A few good partnerships developed with Scotland U17 Wilkinson in particular looking really dangerous. However recently capped Scotland U15 Gillan removed Wilkinson for 29 thanks to a great catch from Asman Ali and sparked a collapse of 4 further wickets leading to Heriots being 90-7 and in real trouble. However this brought usual first teamer Farooq to the wicket and he started to show his class with the bat straight away with some big hits including an effortless 6 which just seemed to keep on going over the boundary.
However Farooq(42) ran out of partners with Anderson in particular proving to be too good against the Heriots tail taking 4 wickets with the away side eventually dismissed for 144.
In reply Largo got off to a poor start with Rintoul bowled for 4 with the score on 10. This brought Largo’s own U17 international Ryan Brown to the wicket and along with opener Warrander they put away the Heriots bowling with relative ease taking the score to 57 before Warrander hit one straight to Anderson at mid off, departing for a well played 29.
The game from this point changed with the introduction Heriot’s batting hero Farooq to the attack. His accuracy and pace caused all in the Largo order problems resulting in a regular fall of wickets blighting the Largo reply with no one able to dig in apart from Brown who was a constant accumulator of runs as others around him were falling. Brown reached his 50 with the score on 110 when partnerAnderson sweetly hit a leg side flick straight to Wilkinson at square-leg for 10 leaving the game there for the taking for either side.
Captain Kinnear joined Brown and pushed along the score to 128 before Kinnear was bowled by Farooq who also bowled Brown for a well played 57, his maiden half century for the first team. Fortunately Farooq’s spell was over with the fine figures of 4 for 12 and Gillin and Bentley were able to see Largo home with 2 wickets in hand although the opposition did drop Gillan,
A close game but ultimately a win for Largo which will hopefully give confidence to the team for the difficult trips to high flying Edinburgh CC and Marchmont in the next few weeks.
(Interestingly the previous day Wilkinson and Brown were both in action for Scotland Wilkinson scoring 119 and Brown 47)
