Following a couple of narrow defeats by Dunnikier and Clackmannan County Largo’s 1st.XI cricketers were keen to get a convincing win under their belts when they played Leith FAB at East Drive, Upper Largo on Saturday.
Despite overnight showers the wicket was in excellent condition, the outfield fast and Leith captain Dicks showed no hesitation in deciding to bat first having won the toss. This looked to be a good call as openers Heintz and McCord scored quickly in the initial overs but the ever reliable Bentley broke the partnership when he took a return catch from Heintz(15) to see Leith on 21 for 1 after 5 overs. Shepherd (0)followed in the next Bentley over “dollying” up a catch to Largo skipper Kinnear.
Dicks then came to the wicket and built a solid, potentially dangerous looking innings with McCord which took Leith to 74 for 2 at drinks (25 overs). McCord was very unlucky to be run-out for 26 leaving Dicks on 40. While Mann (10) offered some resistance until caught and bowled by Rintoul Dicks had little support as Anderson and Scottish u17 spinner Ryan Brown demolished the tail. Brown finished with the remarkable figures of 4 wickets for 5 runs from 20 balls. Dicks’ fine innings ended on 79 when running out off partners he had to have a thrash at Brown. Leith 135 all out.
With Largo’s top order batting being fragile for much of the season no assumptions were made that 136 would be easy to chase down. Rintoul reinforced the pessimistic view when he was caught at slip by Selvin for 4 from the bowling of Wright with 7 on the scoreboard. Warrender(13) and vice-captain Asman Ali got the innings back on track with a partnership of 31 before Warrender too fell to the Selvin - Wright combination. Anderson joined Ali and the pair played some majestic strokes in a partnership of 74 which took Largo to 112 before a momentary lack of concentration saw Anderson (28) give away his wicket to the bowling of Fisher. Twelve runs later Ali followed having made a fine, confidence building 55 from 58 balls. N.Ali and Rajagopal saw Largo home to a 6 wicket win without further loss.
This was a solid, workman like performance from Largo which should boost morale as the team go into the second-half of the season next Saturday when they play Leith away.
Asman Ali (55 runs) and Ryan Brown (4 for 5) were the Largo men of the match but Bentley also impressed with his 10 over spell in which he took 2 wickets for 12 runs.
