On Saturday, at a windy, bitterly cold East Drive, Largo played host to Edinburgh CC in their first home match of the season. Due to availability problems there were 4 changes to the Largo line-up which beat Heriots the previous weekend: three of these replacements - S. Warrender, D. Galloway and I. Brown - were to play significant roles in the outcome of what was a closely contested match.
Winning the toss stand-in skipper Asman Ali asked Edinburgh to bat and this decision seemed well justified when Bentley bowled A. Hussain for a “duck” in the first over. Z ul haq and Farooq however showed great determination as they built a long and patient innings punishing anything short and wide from the Largo bowlers.
The introduction of the bustling Stevie Warrender eventually brought about the breakthrough trapping Z ul haq LBW (46) and having Farooq(77) stumped by his wicketkeeping brother, Andy.
A cameo of 24 by U. Haider saw Edinburgh to 188 all out as Bentley and Robertson picked-up the other wickets cheaply.
As was the case last week Largo’s top order struggled. Poor shot selection (and execution) rather than fearsome, accurate bowling brought about the downfall of 4 of the top 5 with Galloway the exception as he showed good touch in scoring his 32 before being bowled by Aziz. With the score 72 for 5 after 17 overs a dreadful sense of déjà vu swept through the freezing Largo faithful.
As he did last week Ryan Brown, “Cricket Scotland’s U-15 Player of the Year”, was to play a part in steadying the ship as he and his dad, Ian, built a terrific partnership of 65 before Brown Snr. was bowled by Ahmed for 39 and the score now on 137 for 6.
Further drama was to come as the hero of last weeks batting Hughes Gillin was “run out” for only 2 as the youngsters went for a quick run. 7 wickets down and 46 required.
Brown Jnr. and S. Warrender then added 39 priceless runs with Warrender showing good application and somewhat uncharacteristic patience before he was caught and bowled by A. Hussain for 23. Brown and Robertson then added the 7 runs required to see Largo home with Ryan Brown finishing unbeaten on 40, a genuinely first class effort.
A very good start to the season with a 2 from 2 record for the “Firsts” but with old Division 1 rivals Marchmont Saturday’s visitors to East Drive, Upper Largo, the top order must find some form to keep this record intact. Selectors will also have difficult choices to make as/if this weekend’s absentees become available.
As well as the players and spectators club shirt sponsor Tony Haresign of “Esquire barbershop”, Anstruther hopes to see a rise in temperatures so that the shirts aren’t buried under the endless layers of sweaters worn by some players on Saturday!!
