A very youthful Largo 2nd XI side featuring 5 juniors welcomed St.Modans 2s to a sunny East Drive on Saturday. Largo captain Brent Bentley lost the toss and his side were asked to field first.
Largo opened with Innes and Stuart Macdonald and despite an early chance being put down, the pair managed to get 3 wickets in their opening spells, 2 clean bowled and 1 from a good catch behind the stumps by Murdo Duncan. Ravikumar and Razook would steady the innings before on 23 Ravikumar was run out thanks to a great bit of fielding from Murdo Duncan to race to the ball from behind the stumps and hit the wickets directly with his throw.
At this point Largo were well on top and when Sandhu dismissed Ikram thanks to a good catch by Smith followed by a 2nd run out, this time by debutant Emily Archibald, the home side were on the verge of bowling out the visitors for a low score. Despite a great spell from Fletcher Smith with some big swinging deliveries St.Modans did though push the score past 100 as Asif and Varghese both moved in to the 20s. Emily Archibald though would come in to the attack and add to her run out with 2 wickets clean bowled in an impressive first spell in senior cricket before finishing the innings herself by taking the catch off Bentley to leave St.Modans 121 all out in just 25 overs. This was a very impressive display from the home side especially from the youngsters who contributed in some way to all the wickets taken.
In reply Largo opened with Bentley and Slade and immediately were put under pressure from some tight bowing from the visitors. Slade was bowled for a duck before stubborn resistance was put up from Craig Walker, making a very welcome returning to Largo colours as the openers from St.Modans gave nothing easy to score from. Hoping they had done the hard work the pair lined up against the change bowlers of Ravikumar and Kumar but with the score on 21 Ravikumar instead took 3 wickets in an over all bowled with Walker (11), Sandhu and I.Macdonald dismissed.
From here Largo were trying to get to meaningful score if not the target and managed a partnership of 20 between Smith (7) and Bentley (17) before the wicket of Smith brought about a collapse and quick end to the innings as Largo were bowled out for 47, and a 74 run defeat.
Though it was a defeat the Largo side will be very encouraged for the future from what they saw in this match and provided good game time in senior cricket for the juniors involved. Largo 2nd XI has an off week next week before returning to face Falkland 3s in their next outing.
