Saturday - Home vs Arbroath 2nd XI
On Saturday Largo faced the current league leaders Forfarshire 2s knowing they would need to be on top of their game to have a chance of the win.
Largo captain Gillin won the toss and decided to field first. Rowley and Cusick would open the bowling and from the off Forfarshire made their intent clear with boundaries flowing early, Cusick though would make the important breakthrough getting Stonebridge out bowled with the score on 50. Runs would continue to flow though and despite 2 wickets for Gillan and 1 for Udayan Forfarshire would reach the drinks break well placed at 129 for 4.
Udayan would pick up another wicket quickly after the drinks break but just as it seemed Forfarshire would be on for a huge score, the introduction of Merrington changed the script for the home side. Striking with his first ball of the day and finding another 2 balls later the momentum was halted for a time. Merrington would pick up another wicket and end with figures of 3 for 24. Largo would end up restricting the opposition to 240/9 which given how the game was going in to the final overs for the home side they would have accepted on what was a great East Drive wicket.
Largo would begin their chase with Warrender and Cusick, with the pair looking to get Largo off to a strong start. Warrender started well, with a couple of nice boundaries seeming to settle him in before he was the first wicket to fall for 10, soon followed by Das and Gillin, Largo found themselves in trouble at 33 for 3. Rowley joined Cusick at the crease and looked to reset for Largo but it wouldn’t be long till Cusick would edge to slip and the home side were 4 down.
Coates was the next batter in and looked settled from the start and along with Rowley the runs started to flow, Coates in particular hitting a number of boundaries and scoring at nearly a run a ball until he was to fall for 38, Largo were now 105 for 5. Rowley would continue to add runs but wickets would fall at the other end at regular intervals with Craig McConnachie taking 4 quick wickets and Largo's chase was over for 144 with Rowley the last wicket to fall for a well played 44. A tough game against a very strong opposition but with a lot of positives in how largo stuck at it in the field and good batting performances from Rowley and Coates. Largo would now head to Arbroath for then second part of the double header weekend.
Sunday vs Arbroath United 2s
Sunday saw Largo taking the trip up the coast to play Arbroath 2s. With a side missing 5 regulars it was left to Das to lead the side in regular captain Gillin's absence.
Winning the toss, Das opted to bowl first. Largo would open the bowling with Merrington, looking to follow on from his 3 wickets the day prior and Udayan. For the second day running though the opposition would get off to a strong start with the openers taking a liking to Merrington's pace in particular. Das made an early change bringing Coates into the attack and this slowed the rate with Coates bowling well and keeping the scoring rate down, Arbroath though would reach 60 for 0 after 10 overs. Looking for the breakthrough Das would turn to the returning Stevie Warrender who despite not having bowled a ball in 3 years bowled with great pace and swing through his spell and was unlucky to not claim a wicket on his return.
Arbroath would reach the 100 mark without the fall of a wicket before Barclay would claim the first of 3 wickets on the day, including his 400th wicket for the club, breaking the opening stand. Das would bring himself onto bowl in an attempt to keep the scoring down and bowled well without taking a wicket. Arbroath would continue to add runs at regular intervals for the largo bowlers struggling to keep a consistent line and length allowing the batters to score with relative ease. Udayan would finally make the breakthrough with Arbroath on 193 and still 11 overs to go. Both Merrington and Kriskinans would claim late wickets but Arbroath would set Largo a daunting 290 to chase down. Largo bowling 37 wides in the total which would have been many more had it not been for a fantastic display of wicket keeping from Andy Warrender showing his goalkeeping skills diving around behind the stumps.
With Largo knowing a solid start was important, they opened with Andy Warrender and Das. An early wicket though would fall with Das bowled for just 4. Kriskinans joined Warrender at the crease and looked settled with a mix of good quick singles and boundaries flowing between the pair and Largo would move past 50 in the 11th over before Warrender would fall LBW for 18. Coates looking to continue his form from Saturday joined Kriskinans and again showed his timing with some lovely boundaries. Kriskinans though would be the next to go for 23 clean bowled followed shortly after by Tocher to leave Largo 77 for 4. Udayan joined Coates and the score moved past the 100 mark before a flurry of wickets fell leaving Largo 113 for 7 as Coates, Udayan and Singh fell.
Securing more batting points now became the aim for Largo with Barclay and Boother together at the crease. Boother though would become the next wicket to fall for 5. Barclay would continue to score quickly hitting the boundary regularly and was ably supported by Merrington who equalled his highest previous score of 13 which included an excellent 6 deposited over the cars in the car park before he would be the next wicket to fall. This brought Stevie Warrender to the crease and he would contribute 5 valuable runs taking Largo past another batting point before being the last wicket to fall with Barclay top scoring not out 40.
A tough loss for an understrength Largo side who move to next weekend's visit to Rossie Priory knowing they will need to starting getting some wins in the board to avoid relegation this season.
