Good win in home opener for 1st XI

On Saturday Largo's 1st XI looked to get their first win of the league season as they welcomed Holy Cross across the bridge from Edinburgh. Captain David Scott lost the toss and Largo were asked to bat first.

Largo with a strong batting line-up on paper, opened with Chris Baddeley and Ryan Wilson and did their job well of seeing off the new ball with Baddeley especially looking comfortable in his first match of the season. The pair moved on to 32 before Wilson was caught for 4 and shortly after Baddeley was bowled by Reiss for 24, with Reiss soon after also removing the dangerous Gillin for 14 to leave Largo struggling a little on 60/3 in the 16th over.

The game would turn though on the partnership that followed with John Robertson and Murray Sneddon coming together and complementing each other well, Robertson more patient and Sneddon looking to play his naturally aggressive game. Sneddon would reach his 50 first after punishing anything loose delivered by the visitor's bowlers to the boundary through the leg side with great power, followed soon after by Robertson who by the time the partnership had reach the 100 mark in the 33rd over was also finding the gaps in the field with ease.

Finally with the partnership on a near record 153 and 2 overs to go Robertson was caught on the boundary for 57 leaving it only to be seen if Sneddon could get the 12 runs he required for a maiden 1st XI hundred. With 11 needed off the last over much to his and his team-mates' delight thanks to a 5th 6 in his innings and a quick run off the last ball Sneddon made it to a well deserved hundred, guiding Largo in the process to 224-5 off their 40 overs.

In reply Largo started poorly with Scott struggling to find his line and Aidan Brown pulling up injured after only 2 overs. It was down therefore to the change bowlers to steady the ship and in the form of Hughes Gillin initially and then Nicky Rintoul who managed 4 maidens off his first 6 overs the scoring rate was slowed down considerably, putting pressure on the opposition. The first Largo wickets however went to Chris Baddeley who removed Lawrie for 14 and former Largo man Clemens for 8 both bowled leaving Holy Cross needing to up the run rate to get anywhere near the Largo total, especially with their being no boundary hit between the 9th and 25th over to help the score along.

Holy Cross in the overs that followed did manage to build a partnership between Gammell (58) and Moore (29) however the score with 10 overs to go was clearly going to be out of sight for the visitors and with the reintroduction of last weeks star bowler Harney came the wickets of both set batsman and in the end a 44 run win for the Largo side.

This was a very encouraging first win for Largo with a good all round performance with the ball and Sneddon hitting the first of what is hopefully many big scores for this Largo batting line up this season who travel to Bourghmuir next week.
