Largo played hosts to Dundee High School 2nd XI in a must win match at East Drive this week.
With holidays and unavailability hitting the team vice-captain Das once again lead the team in Hughes Gillin’s absence and lost the toss with Largo surprising asked to bowl first.
The usual pairing of Rowley and Cusick would open the bowling hoping to take early wickets. Cusick would strike first with Merrington taking the catch on the boundary before Rowley would claim a wicket to have Dundee 2 down for just 30. No further wickets would fall for either as Dundee looked to take advantage of a fast outfield. The returning Aidan Brown though would strike 2nd ball, the first of his 3 wickets on the day, his pace causing the Dundee batters all kind of problems through his spell. Barclay at the other end would also claim 2 wickets, backing up Aidan and Dundee would find themselves 112 with 7 wickets down. Not for the first time this season though the Largo bowlers would struggle to close out the innings with Ledlie for the visitors, counter attacking and hitting the ball to and over the boundary regularly. Das would turn to Stevie Warrender in the hope of claiming the last 3 wickets and he would strike first ball to his obvious delight. This would cause the last 2 wickets to fall quickly with Warrender taking a second wicket with Gareth Miles taking an outstanding 1 handed diving catch to remove the Dundee captain before claiming a wicket himself with Merrington taking a great sliding catch on the boundary. Dundee would end up setting Largo 201 to win the game.
Largos reply would be led by Andy Warrender and Paul Cusick. Warrender would look in confident mood from the off, looking to build on his recent good form by finding the boundary early. Cusick though would be the first wicket to fall, caught looking to find the boundary off a sharp rising delivery before Rowley would follow him, bowled for 3 to leave largo 34 for 2. Das would join Warrender at the crease and the pair would steady the reply taking Largo past 100 with good running and boundaries as Dundee rotated their bowling looking to get back into the game. Das would fall LBW with the score on 108 which brought Largos usual number 11 Cameron Merrington to the crease due to having to leave early. This would prove to be significant in the result of the game. Warrender would reach another 50 shortly after and most at the ground would assume the result of the game would lie heavily on his shoulders, how wrong that would be. Merrington after taking a few balls to get settled would quickly start finding the boundary and move past his previous high score of 13 with Warrender taking a supporting role in proceeding. With the time for his planned departure coming and going Merrington would continue to entertain those watching with shots that any batter would be proud of moving towards his 50 much to the shock of his dad who arrived to give him a lift, with his response to the news of his nearing 50 being unrepeatable in this match report! His maiden 50 would come with a boundary and he would finish the game off with another to end on 54 not out off just 48 balls much to the delight of the whole team for the most unexpected batting performance. Andy Warrender also with another cracking innings, ensuring largo claim their 3rd win of the season ending on 67 not out.
Largo have another home match next week with Tay Lions visiting East Drive as Largo look to build momentum and move up the league.
