Largo’s 1st XI finished off their league season against a very youthful Arbroath side knowing that a win would still give them an outside hope of a league title but required results to go their way elsewhere. Hughes Gillin captained the Largo side as usual and his side bowled first.
Largo opened with Brown and Hamish Sneddon, and both managed an early breakthrough with Brown removing Fraser caught behind for 6 before Stow was bowled for the same score by Sneddon. Hogg and Peal put on a partnership for the visiting side with Peal the aggressor before Hogg was dismissed by Scott for 15. Hayes would make it to 21 before Ben Coates removing the gloves came on to bowl and took a wicket himself with Murray Sneddon taking the catch.
Peal would go on to score 62 before becoming a 2nd victim of the day for Brown but with Clarke scoring a well made 42 before a final flurry of wickets from Sneddon gave Hamish figures of 3/18, Arbroath United 2s had made it to 177/9 in their 45 overs and to what looked a competitive score on the day.
In the knowledge that the league title chances had gone due to Dundee High Fps winning a low scoring encounter early in the day, the Largo side set about the chase and got off to their worst start of the season. With some early variable bounce causing all sorts of problems for the Largo top order, Hayes bowled Cusick, Das and Gillin before D.Coates was bowled by Davidson to leave Largo struggling on 18/4.
H.Sneddon joined Brown at the crease and managed to stop the rot in the innings taking the score to 44 before Stott struck twice to bowl both Sneddon and B.Coates meaning Largo were 44/6 and looking at certain defeat. A Partnership between Udayan and Brown took Largo towards three figures and Brown past his half century to 59 but both would be dismissed with the score just past 100. Hayes would come back in to the attack to finish off a final day 5 wicket haul dismissing M.Sneddon and Michie, resulting in figures of 5/15, meaning Largo were all out 44 runs short of victory.
In what was a disappointing day for the Largo side they will be proud of their performances this year with the knowledge that the difference between league title victory and their final 4th place finish being very small margins in a few games this year. The result means Largo will remain in the SPCU Division 1 for 2024 which we look forward to already.
