Largo win relegation battle against St.Modans with 50 for Udayan taking his side to victory

All round performances from Cusick and Rintoul also prove vital in 1st XI getting the win in final home game of the season.

On Saturday, Largo 1st XI welcomed St.Modans for their final home game of the season knowing the game will prove vital in the outcome of the relegation places in SPCU Division 1. With the visitors in 11th place, Largo in 9th knew that a win would mean they cannot finish in the bottom 2 places but a loss would mean relegation seems very likely this season. Largo won the toss and captain on the day Jayjit Das decided to bat first.

Largo opened with Cusick and B.Coates and they got off to a sticky start as Coates was caught at slip for a duck. This brought former captain Nicky Rintoul to the crease for a rare appearance and after getting off the mark with a 6, he moved the score towards 50 before Ravindran would strike a double blow to the Largo hopes with Rintoul bowled for 26 and Das caught behind for 5. Brown would join Cusick and the pair moved steadily towards drinks before Brown just before the break mistimed a drive and was caught for 12, Largo 80/4.

Udayan would join Cusick and would change the momentum of the innings back to the home side as he immediately began to find the boundaries and moved towards his first league 50 of the season in just 29 balls including 4 sixes in to the fields around East Drive. The partnership of 68 would end when Cusick was caught on the boundary for 38 and once Udayan was dismissed for 58 it was down the lower order to bat out the remaining overs and push towards 200. Rowley and Boother would both be dismissed for ducks but Sandhu’s 22 helped push the score to 199 before Tocher became the final wicket of the innings, Largo setting 200 for the visitors to win.

The usual pair of Cusick and Rowley would open the bowling for Largo and it was Cusick who made the early breakthrough that they were looking for with Mould bowled for 11 before Rowley would again get 2 wickets to leave the visitors struggling at 44/3. Sharma and Mani though would rally to move the St.Modans side towards 100 before Largo would take 2 vital wickets in 2 balls with the score on 96 with Brown bowling Mani (24) before Rintoul dismissed Sharma 33 thanks to a catch by Boother.

Rintoul would prove to be effectively wild in his return as he bowled a few more wides than he would have liked but would take 2 further wickets bowling Nith (1) before a brilliant one-handed catch from Rowley at slip dismissed Ravindran for 4, to leave the visitors on 114/7. St.Modans would keep pushing on as they looked for the result to avoid likely relegation themselves but Largo would keep taking vital wickets as they went on to claim victory with Miles taking a late wicket before Udayan finished his day with 2 wickets to add to his earlier runs to give Largo an important 37 run victory.

After last week’s disappointing result Largo will be glad that when the pressure was on once again, they performed well and go the victory the needed. The side now finish with 2 further away matches, beginning with a tough trip to newly elected League Champions Forfarshire 2s as part of a double header this weekend.
