Largo come out on top for the first time vs Forty Club

Brent Bentley19 May - 17:50

3 wickets from Merrington and an unbeaten 50 from Gillin take Largo to victory.

On another gloriously sunny day to start the 2025 season, Largo in a side picked and captained by President Ally Duncan welcomed the Forty Club for their now annual 30 over fixture at East Drive. After the toss the visitors batted first looking to keep up their 100% record in the tie.

Largo opened the bowling with Cusick and Udayan but as has been the case over the last 2 fixtures the Forty club batters were on top from the start with McDonald and Greenfield looking comfortable at the crease. The pair would pass 50 and look to be accelerating as Aidan Brown and returning Largo veteran Mowat also were unable to stop the flow of boundaries. With the score on 92 however Mowat was able to get the breakthrough with McDonald stumped by Das for 38.

This wicket brought about a collapse from the Forty club side as Merrington joined the attack alongside Mowat and between them they picked up 4 more quick wickets with Merrington removing Greenfield for a top scoring 54 as part of his impressive spell of 3/9. From here Captain Duncan rung the changes in the bowling including bringing himself on to get a wicket stumped by Filsell, and turning to MacLeod who got 2 wickets to close out the innings for the visitors on 158/8 off their 30 overs.

After a fantastic lunch provided by club sponsor Pratis Barns was enjoyed by the teams, the home side opened with Cusick and Das, and the pair would move to 24 before Das was trapped LBW by Inglis for 5. This brough club captain Hughes Gillin to the crease who immediately showed the easy run scoring ability he has finding the gaps with regularity and dealing in boundaries in the good batting conditions as he moved towards 50. Cusick would be dismissed caught for 28 before Gillin would retire on a top score 57.

Ian Brown would be joined at the crease by Largo’s all time leading run scorer Walker who clipped a pull short for 4 that took many in attendance back a few years in their memories before he was sadly bowled for 5. Aidan Brown though would replace Walker at the crease and show the big hitting ability he has in abundance as he smashed 32 not out to take Largo to the target in the 26th over to claim their first win over the Forty Club side.

Thanks again must go to the Forty Club for coming along and providing great opposition and company in one of the highlights in our club calendar each year. We look forward to welcoming them next year, hopefully in similarly sunny conditions.
