Largo 1st XI started their 2025 league season at home against Glenrothes. Hoping to get off to a winning start in his 2025 debut, Hughes Gillin as captain won the toss and decided to bat first.
Largo opened with established opening pair of Das and Cusick and it was the former, fresh off a flight back from India the night before, showing no sign of fatigue as he took advantage of anything loose from the opening bowlers as he sped to 40 off just 32 balls. Largo moved to 71 before Krzyzanowski struck in his first over to removed Das before claiming a 2nd wicket soon after of Sneddon for 12 as Largo moved past 100.
Rowley came in at no.4 looking to increase the scoring rate and build on the platform set. His partner Cusick would make it to 50 to continue his early season form before falling to Tayyiub for 59, Largo now 162/3 with 10 overs to go. Looking for a big finish Gillin came to the crease and along with Coates pushed the score past 200 before falling for a run a ball 35 to Krzyzanowski, Largo eventually finishing on 222/6 after a late debut knock from debutant Boother.
Largo opened in reply with Sneddon and Merrington expecting the opposition to attack in their usual big hitting style and this came to pass as the Glenrothes side raced to 100 at near 10 an over with Merrington taking the only wicket, that of Tayyiub LBW for 2. Gillin rung the changes in bowling with Cusick, Barclay and Boother all unable to find the breakthrough with drop catches again not helping the Largo cause as the dangerous Ahmed looked set for an opening day hundred. However he would be dismissed eventually by Udayan, the opener finishing on 89 off just 64 balls with Das holding on this time to the catch, Glenrothes 141/2.
This sparked a great fightback from the Largo side with wickets for Cusick, Brown and Rowley setting up for an exciting finish as Glenrothes needed a further 28 runs with just 3 wickets left. Sautiyal though would join the unbeaten Patel (70*) and would make sure the opening day win would go to the visitors taking 20 off the final Gillin over to secure a 3 wicket victory.
Largo will be disappointed with this opening day defeat after a good effort with the bat was let down but the catching in the 2nd innings which could have made the difference in this seesaw encounter. Largo will instead look to get their first win of the season against Arbroath 2s away next weekend.
