Largo left to rue dropped catches as they slip to another home defeat

Largo's 2nd XI welcomed Holy Cross's 2nd team to East Drive this weekend hoping to get a long awaited win this season after last weeks dramatic tied game. On what looked a good batting wicket with a short boundary it was Largo who would bat first hoping to take advantage of the conditions.

Captain and top run scorer for Largo this season Guy Robinson opened with Ben Coates and they managed to see off the opposition’s openers well progressing on to 37 before disappointingly Robinson was caught for 26. One former club captain replaced another however with Kinnear coming in at number 3 and despite not being a regular in past seasons reminded all of the run scoring ability he has shown over many years and combined with Coates who was finding the boundary consistently to put Largo on top after 15 overs at 70/1.

It was at 70 though Largo would lose Coates like his opening partner for 26 this time bowled. Nick Robinson would join Kinnear and kept the momentum of the innings going pushing the score past 100 before Kinnear just short of a deserved 50 was caught leaving Largo on 134/4 with 10 overs to go and an opportunity to push on towards a competitive score. In the last 10 overs there was contributions all around from the Largo side with Blake's quick fire 27 the stand out, meaning Largo finished on 189/6, definitely one of the best performances with the bat this season for the home side.

In reply Largo opened with Jim Gillin and Blake who both bowled economically initially in their opening spells but could not find the early breakthroughs that the home side were looking for. With the score on 50 off 12 overs and the visiting side on top Robinson brought himself and Kinnear in to the attack and this pace off approach paid off with Robinson able to make a double breakthrough to remove both openers and bring the game back in to the balance on 67/2 nearing the half way mark in the innings.

Largo though would be left to rue two missed catches however as both Butos and Gaware coming in replace the openers for Holy Cross were dropped early on in their innings. This would be the deciding factor in the game sadly for the Largo side as both batsman would go on to reach 50 and with the partnership unbroken on 133 the away side passed the Largo score to win by 8 wickets.

This was a good performance from the Largo side despite the size of defeat and had they held their catches or had a bit more bowling depth the game may well have been a lot closer. Next week Largo will be looking to get their first away win of the season against Livingston's 2nd XI.

Summary: Largo 189/6 (Kinnear 48, G Robinson 26, B Coates 26) lost to Holy Cross 192/2 (Gaware 68*, Butos 57*, Robinson 2-43) by 8 wickets

Team: G Robinson (c), B Coates, Kinnear, N Robinson, JA Gillin, Blake, Sayer, Dakin, J Gillin, H Coates, Filsell (wk)
