Largo 2nd XI opened their SPCU Division 3 league season for 2026 this weekend as they welcomed league debutants Dundee High FPs 3rd XI to East Drive. Brent Bentley captaining the Largo side lost the toss and his side were asked to bat first.
Bentley himself opened the batting with Largo newcomer Wilkinson and it was Bentley who would give the visitors their first league wicket as he mistimed a drive to point off the bowling of Mackintosh for a duck. Warrender though joined Wilkinson and the pair immediately worked well together rotating strike and punishing anything loose from the Dundee bowlers. With mid innings drinks approaching the pair moved the partnership to 94 before Warrender (33) looking to increase the rate further found Pathak in the deep to bring opposition captain Hopkins his first wicket of the season.
Wilkinson was joined by Tocher and kept the scoring rate consistently around the 5 an over mark before the introduction of the impressive Lorcan Eykelenboom removed both batters with his leg spin, Wilkinson for a very welcome debut knock of 81. The rest of the innings centred around Sandhu who managed to strike 36 off 27 balls to get Largo up to 198/8 off their 40 overs, Pathak finishing with 3 late wickets for the visitors.
In reply another Largo debutant Kamaldeep Singh opened the bowling with Boother. The pair looked threatening at times on an increasingly slow and low pitch but were unable to make any early breakthrough with Mackintosh clearing the ropes twice early on. The change in bowling though brought a change in fortune for the Largo side with Sandhu and Macdonald building the pressure with the ball and claiming 2 wickets each in the following 10 overs, before Sandhu would take a 3rd, this time of Mackintosh for 28.
With the Dundee side now 58/5 the experienced pair of Hopkins and ex Largo player Caddick went about trying to get their side toward 3 figures and extra bonus points. However they would fall just short with Bentley, Ewan Macleod and Warrender all getting their first wickets of the season to reduce the visitors to 94 all out and an impressive looking 104 run victory for the home side.
Against a very youthful side that will likely improve as the season goes on the Largo side will be happy to have got some good early season performances on the board with Wilkinson’s knock the stand out performance on the day. They will hope to carry this form on next weekend as they welcome Kinloch 3s to East Drive.
