Largo’s 1st XI for the last time this year made the long journey up to Aberdeen to face Masterblasters in the first ever meeting between the two sides. Hughes Gillin lost the toss for the visitors and Masterblasters decided to bat first.
Hoping to find some early movement after the overnight rain Largo opened with Cusick and Rowley and the pair got Largo off to the dream start. Firstly, Cusick in his 2nd over managed to take 2 wickets, removing Yalamanchili thanks to a sharp catch at slip from Rowley before bowling Rai for a duck 4 balls later. This was then followed up soon after with Cusick again clean bowling the league top scorer Laghari for just 9. Rowley though was to continue the success as he completed his 9 over spell straight through for just 17 runs as he got 2 LBW decisions removing Husnain (6) and Narne (1) with his outswingers, the home side now 32/5.
Largo were hoping to push home their advantage from here after drinks but the home side would fight back in the form of Mandava and Nishanth. Both would take on the Largo bowling attack, with Mandava especially able to change the momentum of the innings finding the boundaries with regularity off spinners Udayan and Barclay as the home side moved towards 100.
Barclay though at the other end would take the 2 deserved wickets of Fernandes and Mallireddy and captain Gillin would get a wicket of his own removing Nishanth for an explosive 34.It was left to Cusick to return to the attack however and complete the innings with his Largo best figures of 5-24 to bowl out Masterblasters for 162, Mandava running out of partners on 77 Not out.
Largo set out chasing a target higher than looked likely after the start to the first innings with Cusick and Das, and they lost a wicket early with Cusick unable to repeat his heroics with the ball as he was run out for 3. Dom Coates, making a welcome return to the side in partnership with Das moved the score past 50 before he was dismissed by Narne, the ball after hitting him for six for 15. The innings would go back and forth from this point with Das remaining but losing partners at the other end with Gillin (7), Ben Coates (8) and Rowley (0) unable to make a significant score.
Largo would make it past 100 but the pattern continued with Udayan dismissed bowled by Challa for 18, followed by Barclay taking the score to with in 10 runs before being caught going for a big shot off the bowling of Narne for 7.
Largo though would make it to a 2nd league victory of the year with Jayjit Das the difference maker with the bat. Playing one of his best knocks since joining the club he held the innings together rotating the strike throughout while also punishing the home side for anything wayward when possible. Without the usual strength in depth in the Largo side it was left to Das with 8 runs still to get to push his side over the line following the dismissal of Barclay and he did so with the calm assurance he had shown all innings hitting two fours off the back foot in consecutive balls to send his side to victory, finishing on 82 Not Out.
The Largo side will be delighted with the hard-fought victory after being unable to get over the line in the last few weeks. The game was equally important as many of the sides just above them in the league also won on the day leaving it very tight for the 2nd relegation place in Division 1. Largo remain on the road next week as they enter the 2nd half of the season, but have the much shorter trip to Glenrothes.
