For the 2nd time in 3 weeks Largo 2s faced Glenrothes 2nd XI on Saturday, this time at Glenrothes’ home at Gilvenbank. Largo captained this time by Brent Bentley won the toss and decided to bowl first.
Largo opened the bowling with father and son Stuart and Innes Macdonald, 2 of 4 members of the Macdonald family to be playing on the day with Ross and Graham also in the side, and Innes would make an early breakthrough dismissing the experienced Snook for just 1. This wicket though would bring Coppisetty to join Nalupurakkal Balan at the crease and both players immediately showed attacking intent looking to score boundaries wherever possible, especially to the leg side boundaries.
Both would see off the openers and despite the best efforts of Sandhu who was unlucky to not pick up a wicket, would go on to pass 50 and find boundaries with regularity, not letting the Largo bowlers get away with any loose bowling. The pair would bring up the 150 partnership before Murdo Duncan got a deserved wicket bowling Nalupurakkal Balan for a destructive 76, followed next over by Innes returning to the attack to bowl Coppisetty for 68.
Largo hoped this meant they would be able to keep the scoring down but despite Bentley getting the wicket of hard hitting Ullah (31) runs kept flowing for the home side with Glenrothes finishing on an impressive 256/5, Cullerton also scoring a well-played 34.
Largo opened with Bentley and Innes Macdonald in reply and the pair got off to a solid start. The opening stand made it to 34 before a one handed catch at mid on by Ullah gave Taylor the wicket of Bentley for 22, before unfortunately batting with his son, Stuart ran himself out going for a quick single for a duck without facing a ball.
Sandhu would join Innes at the crease and would put the pressure back on the Glenrothes attack as he went about showing some boundary hitting of his own. Innes would eventually fall for 11 after showing an ability to bat time that he can build upon for future innings to be replaced by uncle Ross Macdonald who helped the score past 100 with Sandu going well.
The Largo innings though on 122/3 would fall away with a collapse started by the dismissal of Ross for 22, followed by Sandhu for the top score 43, plus both Fletcher and the returning after injury Patrick Smith to leave Largo 131/7. Murdo Duncan would help Largo get past 150 with a well made 13 but his dismissal and that of Filsell left Largo on 151/9 when their 40 overs was completed, a 105 run defeat.
Largo will be pleased to have shown some fight with the bat and see the youngsters in the side performing well, but in truth were outclassed on the day against a much stronger Glenrothes side. Largo return home next week to face Falkland 3s.
