Falkland prove too strong as they beat Largo and the rain to claim victory

Brent Bentley1 Jun - 10:26

Das top scorers with 44 as Largo fall to heavy defeat.

Fresh off last week’s victory in Perth, Largo 1st XI headed home to face local rivals Falkland 2s who were looking to continue their strong start to the season. Hughes Gillin captained the Largo side and after losing the toss in slightly damp conditions after the overnight rain, his side were asked to bat first.

Starting on the back foot from the start after one of last weeks star players with the bat Rowley was injured in the warm up, Largo opened with usual pair Cusick and Das, and unfortunately the start to the game got worse as Cusick and Baddeley were removed each for just 3 by De Jager, Largo 10/2. Gillin though would come to the crease and get Largo back in the game as he managed to push the score along at near a run a ball as along with Das they saw off the opposition openers and put Largo in to a strong position as they neared mid innings drinks.

With the score on 88 however Gillin would be dismissed for 43 LBW to Halliwell before the same bowler removed Das bowled for the top score of 44 and sparked a collapse that Largo couldn’t afford in circumstances. No batter from this point on would pass 13 with the lower order only able to inch towards a total with the final wicket of Merrington for 10 taken with Largo on just 150, bowled out with 2 overs to spare.

In reply looking for quick runs to beat the forecast rain the Falkland side started quickly before two wickets, one for Gillin caught by Udayan and one for Cusick briefly gave Largo hope of an unlikely win with Falkland reduced to 38/2. This however brought De Jager to the crease to join Campbell and the pair continued to attack and to good effect despite Gillin ringing the changes in the bowling.

In the end the home side had no answer to the Falkland sides quality with the bat and both set batters would remain unbeaten, Campbell on 64 and De Jager 68 not out as their partnership of 122 saw the visitors home by 8 wickets with 19 overs to spare.

Largo will be disappointed to not be able to make it back to back wins however they were outclassed on the day against a strong Falkland side. They will hope to get back to winning ways next week as they make the trip to Aberdeen to face bottom side Stoneywood Dyce 2s.
