Falkland 3s come out on top against young 2s side at Scroggie Park.

Brent Bentley17 Aug - 18:47

Good performances again from Juniors in the side but Largo unable to put together a winning score in reply with the bat.

Largo 2s travelled to Falkland on Saturday to face their 3rd XI hoping to repeat their win earlier in the year at the same venue, though with a much more youthful side this time around with 5 juniors again in the side. Club president Ally Duncan stepped in as captain for the match and after winning the toss he chose to field first.

Largo opened with Sandhu and Emily Archibald and it was Sandhu who took the first wicket, bowling Gibson for 14. Halliwell would join Siriwardena though and the pair would push the score towards 100 at drinks with Smith and Duncan luckless with the ball after replacing the openers.

After the break however the Largo side would end up back in the game by taking regular wickets to peg back the home side with Smith firstly dismissing Halliwell bowled for 38 before Archibald forced the run out of Denney for 22. Archibald would return to take the wicket herself of Kirkbride for 19 in her impressive spell of 1/30 given the small pitch dimensions, as the Falkland side finished their 40 overs on 222/4, Siriwardena batting through the innings for their 68 not out.

In reply Largo opened with Ryan Wilson and Patrick Smith and the pair got off to a solid start before a double blow was struck by the home side, Smith bowled for 7 followed soon after by Sandhu for just 1. The visitors would progress steadily from this point in the middle overs but kept losing wickets at the wrong time with Wilson (22), Archibald (18) and Brown (25) all getting in but failing to make the match winning contribution required.

Largo were struggling at this point as they lost 2 further wickets with Alex Wilson on his senior debut making a promising 10 before the partnership of captain Duncan and Fletcher Smith gave the visitors hope as the pair got their side with in 40 runs with overs to spare. Smith in his best performance with the bat in senior cricket would score a well played 33 not out but after the wicket of Duncan for 23, father and daughter Ewan and Eilidh MacLeod could only contribute 5 between then to leave the Largo side 31 runs short of victory.

Largo will be disappointed that nobody could make the match winning score with the bat but once again the performances from the juniors in the side showed the future is bright for the Largo side as they continue to give opportunities in this area as the season comes to a close. The Largo side head back home next week for the final time as they face league leaders Broomhall as they look to secure the league title with a game to spare.
