Double defeat again for Largo sides in weekend fixtures

Double defeat again for Largo sides in weekend fixtures

Brent Bentley7 Jun - 17:34

1st XI despite 48 from Warrender fall to 53 run Rossie Priory loss as 2nd XI outclassed by League Leaders Scot Lions

1st XI

Largo 1st XI travelled to Rossie Priory on Saturday in need of a win after dropping to 2nd bottom of the league after last week’s double defeat. Captain Hughes Gillin won the toss and chose to bowl first.

Rowley and Cusick opened the bowling and soon had Largo on top as 2 wickets from Rowley, a caught and bowled along with a sharp stumping from Warrender had the home side struggling at 10/2 off 8 overs, while also missing a run out chance and a drop catch of Awais to further press home the advantage. Stephens and Awais though would from here start setting about the Largo attack and turn the momentum on its head.

Gillin would dismiss Stephens bowled for 20 but Awais was more than taking advantage of his early let offs at the other end as he dismissed all to the boundary with ease as he moved through the gears. Stafylarakis would also make a well-played 32 but Awais would go on to finish on a well-deserved 111 as his side despite some late wickets finished on a challenging 240/8 in their 45 overs.

In reply, Largo started well with Das and Warrender making it to 37 before Das was caught at deep mid on for 26. Warrender would remain though and go on to make a well fought 48 but couldn’t find a partner to stay with him as Largo lost wickets consistently throughout. Barclay would continue his form with the bat with 29 but with Largo well behind the rate they were dismissed in the penultimate over for 187, a 53-run defeat.

Largo will rue the chances to dismiss Awais early and what this could have meant for the result, but will look to turn things around next weekend as they return home to face Masterblasters.

2nd XI

Largo 2s welcomed unbeaten Scot Lions to East Drive in what would prove a tough test for a youthful Largo side. Gareth Miles captained the side and after losing the toss his side were asked to field first.

Largo though started well with S.Macdonald taking 2 early wickets thanks to catches from M.Duncan and Sandhu. The visitors though soon showed their power with the bat as Anthony and Fernando moved the score towards 100 at a good pace. Fernando would be dismissed for 30 by Smith but, this brought De Zoysa to the crease who showed he was clearly a level above the Largo side as he smashed 72 from just 42 balls including 6 sixes in to the fields around East Drive before being dismissed by Miles.

Largo would finish well in the field and manage to bowl out the Lions side thanks to wickets from Singh, Duncan and Archibald but with Anthony top scoring on 82, the league leaders finished on an imposing 270 all out.

In reply Largo were immediately in trouble with the bat as Slade and Duncan were dismissed for ducks and captain Miles went for just 3. Singh though was joined by Sandhu (12) and Brown (29) who managed to progress the score along and blunt the visitors attack through the middle overs. The dismissals of Singh for a well-deserved top score of 38 and Brown though led to a late order collapse as Largo finished just over the 100 mark on 102 and a 168-run loss.

The Largo side will be proud of the fight they showed with both bat and ball in the game, but the difference in ability was clear to see between the sides. They will hope to get back to winning ways next weekend as they travel to Forfarshire to play their 3rd XI.
