Largo 1st XI travelled to Brought Ferry on Saturday to face Forfarshire 2nd XI hoping to build on their record-breaking win last weekend. Ben Coates captained the side on the day with usual captain Hughes Gillin amongst the number of players unavailable for the visitors. After calling wrong his side were asked to bat first on what looked a good wicket to bowl on after the wet weather in the days before the game.
Das opened the batting with usual 2nd team captain Bentley and the pair managed to negotiate the opening bowlers well in tough conditions with Das remaining in good form and putting the pressure on the opposition from the start. The pair made it to 50 before Bentley was bowled looking to be more aggressive for 10 by Garden. Baddeley joined Das and the pair continued the momentum in the innings moving the score past 100 at drinks with Largo on top.
Baddeley would make it to 32 before dragging on to his stumps to the bowling of Sassoon before the same bowler would make the big breakthrough dismissing Das just short of back to back hundreds with Garden taking the catch in the covers, Das scoring a fine 86. The innings was then held together by Cusick whose 29 not out together with partners at the other end dismissed going for big runs at the end meant Largo made it to 206/7 off their 45 overs, a score much higher than seemed likely at the toss but also limited by the fine 5 wicket haul by young Sassoon.
In reply Cusick and Bentley opened the bowling and immediately the pair struggled on what looked now a much better wicket to bat on, but mainly due to some wayward bowling allowing easy runs. Bentley would get the wicket of Sassoon caught well by Barclay in the Gully but the runs kept flowing with the change of bowlers with Garden and Main going at over 8 and over in the first 15 overs.
Needing quick wickets Merrington came in to the attack and bowled with good pace leading to the wicket of Main for 43 just before drinks. Largo though couldn’t make the required breakthroughs after the break with Garden continuing to score freely. Wickets for Barclay and Udayan would help boost the points tally for the visitors but Garden would get his side home for a 5 wicket victory and a well deserved hundred for himself as he finished 103 not out.
After getting a more than competitive total in the first innings the Largo side will be disappointed with their performance in the field, and rue letting this chance of victory in what remains a tight contest at the bottom of the league go. The task gets tougher next week in their penultimate game as they travel to current league leaders Rossie Priory.
