9th placed Largo welcomed 8th place Arbroath United 2nd XI to East Drive on Saturday in a match that both teams knew would go a long way to deciding who will be in the relegation places of SPCU Division 1 at the end of the 2025 season. The visitors won the toss and asked Hughes Gillin and his Largo side to bowl first.
Largo opened with the now established opening attack of Cusick and Rowley who once again got their side off to a great start as they got 3 early wickets. Cusick dismissed Gibson caught and bowled off the first ball of the match before Rowley would get the wickets of Fraser (4) and Stow (15) to leave the Arbroath side 28/3. Paterson and Stott though would get the away side back in the game with a partnership of 42 before Barclay would make the breakthrough with Warrender taking the catch to dismiss Paterson for 31.
Plomer would join Stott and would keep the scoreboard moving for the visitors to move to a position of strength at 144/3 with 15 overs remaining. Barclay would make a 2nd breakthrough soon after removing Plomer for 30 before the returning Cusick would get his 2nd wicket removing Stott for a near run a ball top score of 70. Brown would come in to the attack to take 3 late wickets before Warrender got the final wicket of Hays for 30 to dismiss Arbroath with 3 overs remaining but not before moving to a more than competitive 215.
In reply Largo got off to a similarly poor start with Cusick (0), Warrender (5) and Gillin (5) all dismissed with just 38 on the board. Das at the other end would look to be continuing his good form of late along with Baddeley before he fell to Hayes for 35, followed soon after by Coates for 3, Largo 79/5. Baddeley though would find a partner in Rowley as the pair moved the score past 100 at mid innings and up with the require run rate at this stage.
It was however to be the visitors who would end up the victors on the day as the wicket of Baddeley with the score on 122 for 35 led to a late order failure to spark a partnership of note to win the game. Brown (0), Udayan (17) and Barclay (18) would all go with Stott adding to his first innings runs with 4 wickets to be the real difference maker in the fixture. Largo would finish on 167 and a 48 run defeat.
In what was a big match in their relegation fight Largo will know that this is a major setback in their efforts to finish outside the drop zone. They remain at home though next week as they face Kinloch knowing they must get back to winning ways soon.
