50 from Rowley not enough for season debut victory for 1st XI in Local Derby

Rowley's 59 and 3 wickets from Brown impress on the day but sloppy fielding harms chances of victory

Largo 1st XI got their SPCU Division 1 season up and running for 2026 with the short trip to Falkland to face their 2nd XI. Largo captain Hughes Gillin won his first toss of the season and decided to bat first in the still damp conditions.

Opening the batting with Das was the returning Will Philip after a few seasons away, however it would be a tough start for the opening pair as both were dismissed cheaply with Styer and Cutler providing as good a test as the Largo side may face all season, with both taking a wicket each to leave Largo 8/2. Rowley and Gillin though showed good resilience to see off the opening spell and put on an impressive partnership of 65 before some tight bowling from R.Hepburn caused a frustrated Gillin to sky a catch to Styer for 30, Largo 73/3 at drinks.

The home side kept the squeeze on in the middle overs with Cusick and Coates joining Rowley as they struggling to push the score along due to some accurate bowling from all in the Falkland attack, though Rowley would make it to a deserved 50 before he was run out thanks to a direct hit from the boundary. Largo would get a late burst in a partnership of 29 from the final 4 overs between Brown and Udayan with the later hitting 2 late sixes to take the Largo score to 158/6 off their 45 overs.

In reply, Largo opened with Rowley and Brown, with the pair causing problems from the start but catches being dropped cost Largo the quick start they hoped for. Brown though would finally get the reward for his efforts bowling Trewartha with a beautiful swinging delivery before May edged behind and was caught by Das. Rowley would also get a maiden wicket for the season bowling Meikle for 22 to leave the home side 50/3. Phillip and Barclay would join the attack and would continue to look dangerous but further drop catches continued to hamper the Largo effort.

Phillip would get a wicket LBW of Gallagher for 21 but Campbell and C.Hepburn would make the visitors pay for their fielding errors as they pushed the score towards victory before Brown picked up a 3rd wicket, dismissing Hepburn for 32. Campbell though would remain and make it to a not out 50 as his side reached victory by 5 wickets with 9 over remaining.

In a game played in great spirit throughout, and against one of the favourites to win the league this season the Largo side will be encouraged by this display, but will be aware that their fielding efforts will need to improve if they are to get over the line in future fixtures. Largo will return next week as they face new side Gordonians at East Drive.
