Largo's final friendly before the league season begins ends in defeat

On a chilly day up at East Drive on Sunday Largo welcomed Dundee High FPs for a mixed 1s and 2s friendly before the league season begins for most next weekend. Ben Coates was on double captaincy duty this weekend and his side bowled first in a 35 over a side match.

Merrington and Das opened the bowling for the Largo side but were immediately put under pressure against Dundee’s openers Ancell and Beaumont. With both looking in good form scoring at 5 an over, President Duncan and Captain Coates joined the attack and it was Coates who got the breakthrough dismissing Ancell bowled for 30.

Beaumont would continue on to a half century with some big 6s to reach the milestone before retiring, with Gareth Miles soon taking the 2nd wicket of the innings in his first over as the visitors reached 80 at the half way mark. After the break Finn Miles would show his skills with the ball as well as keeping wicket to take a wicket but the powerful middle order of Dundee High especially Preston progressed the score onwards towards 200.

It was Eilidh MacLeod though who stole the show to finish the innings taking 2 wickets and creating 2 more chances in her 3 overs to show the potential she has with the ball for this and many seasons to come for the club. Eventually Dundee High would just make it over the 200 mark, finishing on 203/6.

Largo in reply would open with Das and Cusick who showed good resolve to see out the opening spells of Hopkins and Preston without loss and lay a platform for the batters to come. However the loss of 4 quick wickets set back the Largo reply with Das dismissed by Beaumont before 3 wickets for Saqiwal of Ewan MacLeod, Merrington and F.Miles meant Largo were struggling.

G.Miles would replace his son at the wicket and looked in good touch making it to 28 with Cusick also picking up valuable time at the wicket making it to 34 before retiring. The best was yet to come through when Coates came to the wicket and showed his usual attacking intent to smash a quick fire 50 including six 6s that he will hope sets him up for a big 2024 to come.

Largo would eventually finish on 151 off their 35 overs for a loss but the exercise for all was to get some good practice in before the games ahead and with youngsters on both sides showing the potential they have going in to 2024 too both sides will look to build from their performances here.
