Largo 2nd XI travelled the short distance on Saturday to Falkland to face their 3rd XI, looking to bounce back from last week’s narrow defeat on what is always a difficult test on their high scoring ground. Brent Bentley was back to captain the side and after winning the toss he chose to bowl first.
Boother and Graham opened for Largo and after a fast start for the home side Boother dismissed Siriwardena (8), caught well in the gully by Slade. Graham would then get reward for his pacey spell bowling Roff (8) before he then also managed a run out of Kirkbride for 2, Falkland 59/3. The home side though would push on from there with Barclay and Lennie using the familiar small ground dimensions to their advantage to find the boundaries with regularity and move the side to 98/3 at drinks.
Barclay would move to his 50 before Bentley brought himself in to the attack and immediately found success. He would go on to take 5 wickets all clean bowled including Barclay (53) and Lennie (39) to bring his side back in to the game and reduce the visitors to 8 wickets down as they pass 150. In partnership with Bentley, Eilidh MacLeod also was producing a productive spell just without the success until she deservedly got 2 wickets with Graham taking the catch in both circumstances to dismiss Falkland for 164.
Chasing a total a lot more achievable than seemed likely earlier in the 1st innings, Bentley opened with Slade and the later got off to a fast start finding boundaries in each of the first 5 overs including a flicked 6 off his legs to the short boundary. Bentley then looked to be finding his rhythm as he found back-to-back boundaries before Gilmour broke the partnership at 47, bowling Bentley for 18. Tocher joined Slade and the scoring rate slowed thanks to Cutler especially, bowling a tight line and giving nothing away, just without the wickets he deserved. Gilmour though would continue at the other end and dismiss Slade for 24 caught and bowled, Largo 69/2 at mid inning drinks.
Graham would join Tocher at the crease however and give the innings the impetuous it needed as he found the boundary with consistency including sixes to the longest side of the ground to move the score past 100. Both though would be dismissed in quick succession with MacHugh returning to remove first Graham (33) and then Tocher (18) both bowled.
These wickets just set the scene for Boother to come in along side Miles and remove all doubt about the result as he calmly hit 32 off just 18 balls to get his side home by 6 wickets with 4 overs still remaining.
Missing some of their usual batting resources the Largo side will be delighted to have come together and chased down the total in what was a true team effort with the bat, complimenting Bentley’s 5 wicket haul earlier in the day to get the win. They will hope to continue this good early season from as they head back home next week to face Glenrothes 2nd XI.
