Perth's picturesque Doo’cot Park was the destination for Largo 1st XI’s final game of the season with the team looking for a victory that could potentially move the side up to 8th position in SPCU Division 1 with a convincing win but a loss could also see then drop to 10th and potential relegation. Captain Gillin won the toss and asked Perth Doocot 2s to bat first.
Opening the bowling were the usual pair of Rowley and Cusick, Largo would strike early one again but this time with a good piece of fielding from Gillin, effecting a run out in just the 3rd over. Both openers would cause the Perth batters plenty of trouble and were unlucky to only pick up one wicket each through their 9 overs. First change bowlers Udayan and Barclay kept the pressure on with Udayan partially unlucky not to pick up any wickets through his 9 overs, regularly passing the edge of the bat without any luck with Owais for the home side making it to his 50.
Barclay would however find 2 wickets including that of Owais and by the end of their spells Perth were 100 for 4 with 10 overs left. It would be left to Gillin and Stevie Warrender to grab the remaining wickets with Gillin taking 3 and Warrender 2 to close the Perth innings on 163. On a quick outfield and a good wicket Largo showed a fantastic team effort to keep Doocot to this score and set up what would still be a testing chase in the circumstances.
With usual opener Cusick injured in the 1st innings, Largo opened with Das and Ben Coates and from the very start of the innings they would look to set the tone with boundaries flowing regularly. Coates in particular was continuing his good end of season form in this new opening spot and the pair reached 75 in just the 15th over before Coates would lose his wicket trying to find the boundary once more for a well-played 34.
Any worries though that this may stall Largo’s momentum were quickly put to bed as Udayan coming in at number 3 took the attack to the Perth bowlers. In his usual style he found the boundary with ease, hitting 7 sixes in just 10 overs and moving to 50 for the 2nd week in a row. Ably supported by Das with one of his best innings of the season to make 47 the pair pushed Largo to a 9 wicket victory, closed out by Udayan hitting a huge six onto the nearby road to finish on 58*. This was a clinical display by Largo winning by 9 wickets and with more than 20 overs left to play.
With this result Largo will finish 8th in the league and move above today’s opponents. In what was a tough season with the team struggling down the league at the seasons midway point the team can be proud of the resilience shown through then second half of the season to pull themselves away from the bottom of the league and to finish the season with their best performance of the year when they needed it most.
