1st XI on wrong side of result again in tight affair vs Gordonians

Brent Bentley7 Jul - 09:23

Another 50 from Warrender not enough to get a defendable score after late collapse.

Saturday saw largo take the long trip up to Ellon to take on Gordonians.

Returning captain Hugh Gillin lost the toss and Largo were asked to bat first on a slightly damp pitch after some morning rain.
The now usual pairing of Warrender and Cusick started well, seeing off the next ball with a mix of boundaries from Warrender and some good running seeing the pair take Largo just short of 50 before Cusick would be the first wicket to fall for 15. Das would join Warrender at the crease and they continued the good start for Largo against some tight bowling and kept the visitors heading in the right direction taking the score past 100, with Warrender getting a well deserved 50 before falling in an unlucky fashion LBW to a ball that barely bounced for 57. Largo would look from this point to up the scoring rate with just over 10 overs left but the new batters would all find this tricky with the surface hard to play attacking shots from the start. Wickets would fall regularly with only Das and Rowley getting into double figures. Largo would lose their last wicket 1 ball short of the full overs for 152, a score which they would have taken and gave a great opportunity to put pressure onto Gordonians.

After a short delay of a heavy rain shower Largo opened the bowling with Rowley and Cusick, looking to make early inroads into the Gordonians batting order. Cusick would do just that with their opener caught by Gillin with the score on just 7. This would be the only early breakthrough though with a few chances going down in the field. Largo though through Gillin would make the breakthrough and with the pitch offering plenty to the spinners Gillin would turn to Barclay and Udayan in search for more wickets. They would continue to take wickets at regular intervals and create pressure on the batters. Udayan ending with 3 wickets and Barclay with 2 but Largo couldn’t quite get enough to win the game with Gordonians reaching their target with 3 wickets to spare with 5 overs left.

A frustrating end in a game of fine margins Largo will be left thinking what if they took their chances and decisions went their way. Largo now head into a rare run of home games starting next week with fellow strugglers Dundee High 2s making the trip to East Drive.
