On Saturday, Largo visited the picturesque home of another newcomer to the league in the form of the Tay lions.
Captain Hughes Gillin returned after missing last weeks win in Dundee, with his first involvement of the day being to lose the toss and see largo out into bat on a soft, spongy wicket.
Largo opened with Das and Cusick and from the first over it became clear that batting wouldn’t be easy with variable bounce seen on a regular basis. The partnership was broken with the score on 24, with Das looking to up the scoring was caught well at mid off for 6. This brought Rowley to the crease and together with Cusick they looked to keep the scoreboard ticking over with well taken singles and a few boundaries moving largo to 57 when Rowley was out caught for 15. Skipper Gillin joined Cusick but in the following over another 2 largo wickets were to fall, first Cusick out LBW for 19 followed next ball by Hamish Sneddon on his long awaited return after over a year out through injury. Largo were now 58 for 4 just shy of the half way point of the innings. Aidan Brown was the new batsman and along with Gillin took advantage of any bad balls from the dual spin attack from Tay lions, with one glorious 6 hit by Brown taking largo past 100 before he would be the next wicket to fall for 22, out stumped from another ball that turned prodigiously. Ben Coates, after last weeks winning runs was next to the crease and after reaching double figures was to become one of 3 wickets to fall in an over to Dilanthe along with Udayan and Macleod as the bowler claimed his 5 for with the last ball of his spell. Gillin was still looking good with the bat and was looking for partners to stick with him so Largo would see out their overs, but after hitting another 6, Gillin in looking for another boundary would find himself stumped for a well worked 46. Largo would see their last wicket fall soon after for 155 with 4 overs unused but in the knowledge that there was plenty in the wicket to give them hope for the 2nd innings.
Largo would open the bowling with Rowley and Sneddon looking to find the early breakthrough largo needed. Tay lions would have other ideas though, with Ravihansa and Wadugee looking to score quickly from the start with a mixture of powerful shots and no small amount of good luck, with the ball regularly just evading the largo fielders. The breakthrough would come in the 9th over with change bowler Brown having Wadugee caught behind by Das for a quick fire 32. This wicket didn’t slow the scoring though, with Gillin changing the bowlers regularly in the hope of gaining more wickets but All the largo bowlers despite toiling hard struggled to build any pressure with the batters dictating play throughout and the bowlers regularly getting their line and length slightly off. Largo would pick up another 3 wickets but never looked likely to get back in the game, Barclay picking up 2 wickets and Coates picking up the other. Tay lions would see the game home with 22 overs to spare with opener Ravihansa ending not out on 71.
This was a tough day after last weeks win but largo must pick themselves up for another away game next week, this time against Kinloch in Dundee.
