Robertson top scores at a bad day at the office

On a cold but dry day in Edinburgh Largo's 1st XI began their league season versus newly promoted Carlton 3rds hoping to build on the win from the 2nd team the day before. With usual captain Rintoul away, Brent Bentley was skipper and unfortunately lost the toss so Largo began the season batting first.

Opening with experienced pair of Warrander and Mowat, it was clear the pitch was not going to be easy to play on with Mowat offering up a chance before falling for 5 in the 8th over. This brought John Robertson to the crease and immediately through some enthusiastic running and hitting the bad ball away when offered up the partnership between Robertson and Warrander pushed the score on to 70-1 at 20 overs and a big score was looking on the cards. However as has happened to the Largo team over the last few years too many times this was not to be in reality.

From the time Warrander was ran out going for one to many quick singles, going for a good 44 the Largo side collapsed from 77-1 to 111-7 and the momentum of the innings was gone. The positive for the Largo side though was that through this all Robertson was still at the crease and along with S.Bentley and Filsell the score was pushed on to 144 all out with Robertson last man out for a very well played 60 that gives much promise for the rest of the season.

Hoping for early wickets to put pressure on B.Bentley opened with the pair of Brown and Gillin but unfortunately for the Largo side the opposition got off to a flyer and with the score on 42 in 6 overs before Scott made the breakthrough removing Blood for 29, they were on the back foot. The introduction of B.Bentley himself in partnership with Scott lead to a slowing of the scoring rate and a 2nd wicket for Largo Bentley getting the wicket with Mowat taking a good catch at Mid wicket with the score on 81.

This proved however to be the last wicket taken by the Largo side with the home team reaching their target in the 33rd over. Overall a disappointing start to the season with the first home game of the season next week again Morton offering an opportunity to hopefully get back on track with a win.
