Largo off the mark with captain Robinson leading by example

Match Report 2nds vs Musselburgh 2s

On a wet and windy day at East Drive and with more rain forecast Largo 2nds faced Musselburgh 2s in a game reduced to 20 overs a side in the hope of getting a result. Largo looking for their first win of the season won the toss and Captain Guy Robinson decided to bat first.

Looking to continue his good early season form Robinson opened the batting himself with Rintoul and started steadily, pushing the score to 21 before Rintoul was bowled for 6. This wicket brought Nick Robinson to join his brother in the middle and with Guy looking to anchor the innings, Nick showed his intent from the start looking to find the boundaries and take the slow outfield out of the equation. The approach would prove to be a good one with Nick finding the boundary on 4 occasions including a massive 6 on to the grass banks surrounding the ground before he was removed for 21 leaving Largo on 63 from 12 overs and looking for a score well over 100 to put the visitors under pressure.

Ben Michie would fall soon after N.Robinson bringing Ally Duncan to the wicket to join Guy and together they both managed to play the conditions, as well as the opposition expertly with well judged running between the wickets and the occasional boundary mixed in, Duncan hitting one of his biggest 6s of the season to date to the long boundary at deep square leg. Robinson would reach a well deserved 50 in the 17th over before Duncan looking to hit another big shot to the leg side after pushing the score past 100 caught the top edge and was caught well by Bongu for 15. Bentley and Blake would join Robinson to finish the innings with Robinson carrying his bat for 62* and Largo finished on 111-5 off their 20 overs.

A quick turn around was to follow before Brent Bentley and Rintoul opened the bowling looking for a good early start which initially did not happen with big hitting Naveed looking very dangerous moving to 16 in just 3 overs. However captain Robinson left on the experienced bowling pair and this proved to be effective with Rintoul removing Naveed in the next over caught well by the captain himself before a stunning catch given the conditions by Ally Duncan at short cover to remove Patel for 3 left the visitors 28/2 off 8 overs and well behind the required rate.

Following Bentley and Rintoul in the bowling was Duncan and Michie who carried on economically to start before a few big overs thanks to opposition captain Fox meant that going in to the final 6 overs with 8 wickets remaining Musselburgh required 60 to win. Thankfully for the home side however a run out after good work by G.Robinson on the boundary broke the partnership before Duncan got a well deserved wicket bowling Patel for 7. A further direct hit run out this time by G.Robinson soon after left the visitors needing over 12 an over off the last 4 overs when S.Bentley and Blake came on to finish off the innings and this task did prove too much with Blake getting Fox out for 41 thanks to another very good catch by Ben Michie. Musselburgh finished on 101-6 off their 20 overs giving Largo the vital first win of the season by 10 runs.

This is an important win to get the 2nd XI off the bottom of the league in Divison 5, however real plaudits must go to all those involved for getting the game done in very wet conditions throughout when easily the game could have been called off. Special mention must also go to the opposition for travelling through to get the game started in the first place and for playing the game in such a good spirit throughout so thanks must be sent to captain Fox and his team for their efforts throughout and we look forward to the return game later in the season. The 2nds have another home game next week against Edinburgh CC 3rds.
