Good performance in a losing cause by 2nd XI

The first league game at East Drive this year was the 2nds league game against fellow Fifer's Dunnikier 2s. Stand in skipper for the day Guy Robinson lost the toss and Largo were asked to bat first on what looked a good batting wicket especially for the time of year.

Captain Robinson opened the batting with himself and Brent Bentley and immediately Robinson showed his intent by smashing the first ball of the season for 4. The score from this point continued to move along well for the home side with Robinson receiving 2 slices of luck from dropped catches but continuing to punish any lose bowling with Largo 41-0 off 10 overs. At this point the change of bowlers for Dunnikier came but only helped the Largo side with Bentley becoming more aggressive and with the lunch break approaching Largo were 110-0 and looked set for a big score.

Unfortunately in the 19th over G.Robinson was bowled for 70 followed next ball by the experienced Galloway for a duck and Dunnikier were back in the game. Bentley was joined by Kinnear who put on a partnership of 25 before again a double blow of Kinnear given LBW for 17 and Bentley playing a tired shot to be bowled for 47. From this point Largo tried to push on but apart from Nick Robinson's 14 no other batter made double figures with largo finishing on 174 all out. This was a score that would have been seen as a success before the start of the innings and a competitive score but short of what looked possible when the openers were together.

In reply Largo went looking for early wickets and this came to pass with Dan Wood opening the bowling and getting the wicket of Khalid caught by Jamie Gillin for 8. In light of not having many regular bowling options captain Robinson from here on would have to mix up his bowlers and it was the captain himself who made the next breakthroughs getting A and S Ali both caught by Galloway for 26 and 25 respectively and Largo were in with a chance of an opening day victory.

The game from the halfway point then became a battle with the elements as much as anything as the rain came down and made bowling for the Largo side especially difficult. Dunnikier though couldnt get away and after 2 run outs and the removal of Sandhu for 34 by Jim Gillin the game got very tight and eventually lead to the game coming down to the last over with Dunnikier needing 5 runs with 3 wickets remaining,.

Unfortunately for the home side after a controversial final over, the visitors managed to get over the line with a ball to spare and leave Largo disappointed. This was a good all around performance from an under strength 2nds side who will be looking for their first win this weekend away to Holy Cross 2s.
