Largo 20  not out

Largo Cricket Club finished their 2006 season on a high last Sunday when they won the inaugural Dunnikier Cricket Club 20/20 tournament.  This 20 over a side competition was part of the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Kirkcaldy club but they are hoping to make it an annual event.  4 teams took part in a very enjoyable days cricket, The hosts Dunnikier played Broomhall CC in the first game.  Broomhall had batted first and amassed 136 off their 20 overs, a good score on what was a very slow and quite damp wicket, probably typical for this late stage in the season.  Dunnikier gave a good chase but in the end it wasn’t enough as the East league Division 6 winners caused an upset by defeating the hosts who play 3 divisions above them by 12 runs in the last over.  Largo got themselves under way with a convincing win over East league Division 8 champions Dunfermline Wanderers CC in what could have been a potential banana skin for the Division 2 men.  Asked to bat first Largo were all out for 131 in 19.3 overs, a good competitive score.  Chris Barclay top scoring with 58.  Dunfermline Wanderers were never in the hunt as Largo held their catches and thanks to some good sharp wicket keeping by Walker and tight bowling from Smith, Barclay, Safyaan Sharif and Duncan they ensured Dunfermline Wanderers were all out for 46.

So it was a Broomhall v Largo final.  Broomhall won the toss and decided they would bat first which seemed quite surprising at the time as the wicket was very slow and Largo had just bowled Dunfermline Wanderers out for 46, their plan being that it would be pretty dark by the time Largo had to bat.  Broomhall got off to a good start as they ran singles quickly and despatched anything short.  However,  Largo took wickets at crucial times.  The most impressive bowler was Nicky Rintoul as he bowled with great pace and accuracy picking up a couple of good wickets.  Bowlers Smith and Duncan picked up quick wickets and with Walker taking another couple of sharp stumpings Largo were able to restrict Broomhall to 95 for 8 off their 20 overs.  The teams had to turn around quickly as the light was always going to be a factor.  Walker and Asman Ali opened and got Largo off to a great start.  Asman was the first wicket to fall and Largo were 30 for 1 after 5 overs.  Robinson hit a couple of glorious fours before being adjudged LBW.  Barclay joined Walker at the crease and these two set about the Broomhall attack with great venom.  Broomhall never had anything really threatening in their locker and even with a late dismissal of Barclay it was all too late as Safyaan Sharif saw it home with Walker in the gathering gloom to pass the total in the 14th over with 3 wickets down.  This was a great way for the Largo men to finish the season with some much deserved silverware.  There was a small presentation at the end of the match as Largo skipper Ally Duncan was presented with a commerative shield for the winning side by Dunnikier CC president Alan Cutter.  The Largo winning team was: Ally Duncan (captain) Asman Ali (vice captain) Craig Walker, David Smith, Chris Barclay, Safyaan Sharif, Guy Robinson, David Galloway, Nicky Rintoul, Bobby Rintoul, Paul Braidwood
