Anderson  Puts  Edinburgh In A Spin

Captain Bentley and his merry men? Travelled to the capital once more to face a team in Edinburgh South who gained promotion twice on a run and who had started the season so well that they were confident that they were going to make it three in a row.

With the wicket very green and spongy winning the toss was agreed to be the key thing to do, Captain Bentley duly won the toss and put the home side into bat.

Thing started really well with openers Steve Bentley and Andy Robertson restricting the home team to 27 for 0 off 12 over’s and Largo were for the only time in the game,  on top.  Sadly the momentum was lost very quickly as Edinburgh resorted to some attacking/big hitting cricket which paid of  for them with Patel 33, Khan 30, Saeed 57, taking 130 runs of the next 20 over’s with all three batsman being dropped with the unlucky Alex being the bowler, but young Anderson is now made of sterner stuff and continued to bowl what was the most impressive spell of bowling you will see from a chap so young anywhere on any cricket pitch. Alex just mesmerised the opposition and finished with 6 wickets from his nine over’s (Smudger the young gun is coming to get your place).

Despite some fine bowling with out much reward from all the Largo Bowlers the Edinburgh batsman continued with their big hitting strategy and it paid of for them as they finished with 211 for 9 from their 45 over’s, and excellent score on that wicket.

After tea a new opening partnership of Andy Warrender and Tom Murdoch went out to bat confident that they could make inroads into Edinburgh’s impressive score, but alas it was not to be with a disastrous mix up at one end ending with Tom being run out and the word “GO” now officially removed from the batting terminology of the Largo Cricket Club Second Eleven.

Wickets then continued to fall rapidly with three golden ducks on the trot not allowing the skipper the 20 winks he was craving for after having just 4 hours sleep in the last two days and only Gordon Kinnear and George Nairne managed the dizzy heights of double figures and Largo stumped tamely to 73 all out and gained only one batting point.

Despite this thanks must go to the Edinburgh South Skipper and his team for a magic tea and a game played in as fun and friendly a spirit that I have played in for a long time.
