The league season began on Saturday at East Drive as last year’s
Division 6 champions played host to Dalgety Bay in a match sponsored by Boyack
Homes, Kirkcaldy. With more than half of the side who clinched the title in the
last game of last season unavailable Largo’s resources were stretched to the
limit but Dalgety Bay were missing key players too. Losing the toss Largo 2nd
XI were asked to bat and began their foray into Division 5 in spectacular style
as Sayer drove the first ball down the ground for six! Largo’s innings built
up steadily against some tidy opposition bowling. Barnes and Steve Bentley put
on 46 for the second wicket with Bentley going on to a splendid half century.
With 75 on the board for the loss of 3 wickets after 30 overs it was time to up
the tempo and, through debutant van Zyl ably supported by Gibson, this was
achieved as Largo almost doubled their score in the last 15 overs to close on
143 for 4.
The two main scorers of the Largo innings
now opened the bowling attack and Bentley soon trapped Bielski lbw. Peden had
already had two lives when a lightning return from substitute Nick Robinson,
fielding for the indisposed Fleming, saw Van Zyl run out the opener. Largo now
held 3 crucial catches through Holland, fielding for the first time for Largo,
young Brent Bentley and Sayer with a magnificent effort. Dalgety Bay were now in
deep trouble but Bentley and van Zyl refused to lessen their grip as the innings
subsided to 28 all out. Sayer having made the first impact on the game had the
last as he launched himself to hold on to a fierce drive from skipper Dolby.
Next week Largo visit last year’s Division 6 runners-up – Falkland.
