Perfect start for Largo Seconds

For the opening game of the 2003 East of Scotland league season newly promoted Largo 2nd XI travelled to Edinburgh to play Kirk Brae in a match sponsored by FCE Group, Leven.
Winning the toss Kirk Brae skipper Steve Colvin opted to bat on a wicket with uneven bounce and a fast outfield. Seath and Sayer opened the bowling and in the 5th over Seath had Seditas caught in the gully but first Hirst and then Sangster joined their skipper to keep the score moving along at 4 runs an over. After 20 overs 80 runs had been scored. Bentley was introduced to the attack and trapped Sangster lbw and smart fielding from Guy Robinson and Fleming conjured 2 run outs. Colvin continued to play some lovely shots, particularly on the drive, but Largo managed to peg back the run rate with some good fielding and persistent bowling. Near the end Bentley struck 3 times in 3 overs as Galloway bowled 5 extremely tight overs. When Sayer induced Flower to drag one on to his stumps the innings closed at 152 with Colvin desperately unlucky to be unbeaten on 99, especially as Kirk Brae were one player short.
Largo's inning started disastrously with Dakin splendidly caught first ball. Sayer was admirably filling the breach as opener until he was out at 28 and Barnes batted with great determination until he was surprised by one that came back sharply to bowl him behind his legs. By now Guy Robinson was batting at his elegant best and, after an unwell Tocher was cheaply dismissed, found the perfect foil in Gibson. Robinson, moved serenely on to his half-century while Gibson was in ruthless mood and dispatched several boundaries with crashing drives and pulls. In ten overs this pair added 75 runs to allow Largo to coast to victory with 16 overs to spare. Robinson struck 11 boundaries and Gibson 9.

Kirk Brae 152 all out (Colvin 99 not out, Bentley 4-41)
Largo 154 for 4 (G. Robinson 66 not out, Gibson 43 not out, Barnes 20)
