Poor Fielding Lets Down Largo
Largo 2XI entertained Falkland 3XI on a blustery Saturday afternoon in a game sponsored by Balmashie Holiday Cottages St Andrews.
Loosing the toss Largo were asked to bat and found the going slow against accurate Bowling. Bentley was first to fall after edging a ball from Melvile. Barnes then joined Dakin and they put on a 34 run partnership before Dakin was trapped lbw on 13. Gibson soon returned to the pavilion after leaving what looked like a wide ball which miraculously cut back and took his middle stump. When Farrell bowled Barnes with the score on 61 Largo were under pressure, Nairne 12and Wilson 18 tried to restore some of the damage but they never really looked comfortable at the crease. The tailend batsmen all pitched in with valuable runs to take Largo to 118 in 47 overs.
With such a low score to defend Largo required good tight fielding. Falkland however opened with two lefthander and the dependable Seath found it hard to find his line and together with the short boundary on the leg side Seath was punished. Falkland were looking good after 5 overs and the scoreboard sitting on 20. Seath was replaced by Nairne and together with Bentley they rapidly reduced the run rate and made things difficult for Falkland. The run rate may have been reduced but Largo failed to take the opportunities that came their way and managed to drop no less than 10 catches and have a poor attempt at a run out. Falkland were made to work hard for the win but with wickets in hand they could afford to go for there shots and eventually secured the victory in the 88 over.
Largo are still in 1st position by a few percentage points but will have to raise their game considerable in the next few weeks if they are to maintain top position.
