With McQueen’s early arrival in the attack, to join Wilkins, bowling to
Arnott and Dakin well over a centuries worth of cricketing experience was being
brought to bear in a gripping and tense struggle. The Largo batsmen did well to
keep the SMRH bowlers at bay but found runs hard to come by as evidenced by
Wilkins remarkable analysis of 13-8-9-0. With 20 overs remaining Largo had not
lost a wicket but 80 runs were still required. The openers, Fleming, Nairne and
Seath all perished attempting to up the run rate and with 8 overs to go 48 runs
were still required. Despite some excellent bowling from Pennie Largo suddenly
homed in on the target as Tocher with some belligerent hitting, and
intelligently supported by Sayer and Lister, took Largo to within sight of
victory. When Tocher perished 3 runs short of a deserved half century, and 4
runs from victory, new recruit Fowler again batted with composure. As last week,
although this time with the bat, the rejuvenated Lister delivered the coup de
grace when he pulled the first ball of the penultimate over to the boundary for
Largo to secure their first ever win over SMRH.
This was a splendid contest played in an excellent spirit characterising
all that is good about the game of cricket with all four results possible until
close to the end. Particular praise must go to Napier who “walked” on appeal
even although this closed the SMRH innings.
SMRH 119 all out in 46 overs (Pennie 32, Sayer 5-27,
Lister 2-23, G. Nairne 2-30, Seath 1-34)
Largo 123 for 7 in 42.1 overs (Tocher 47, Dakin 20,
Arnott 18, Pennie 3-27, McQueen 3-41)
For their second match of the 2002 league campaign Largo 2nd XI travelled
to Stewart Melville Royal High in Edinburgh with match ball sponsorship provided
by T Fleming Homes Ltd of Duns. Largo won the toss and Seath and Lister
continued where they had left off last week bowling superbly and keeping the
SMRH batsman tied down. After 20 overs SMRH had lost 3 wickets in making only 28
but debutant Pennie and the classy McQueen now started to play positively. The
latter’s dismissal for 18 caught by the ever-reliable hands of Dakin was a key
moment for Largo and Sayer’s 5 wickets in 6 overs saw SMRH slide from 87 for 4
to 119 all out.
