Largo Seconds clinch promotion

Largo 2nd XI met Holy Cross 3rd XI in the final league match of the season sponsored by Rembrand Builders Merchant, Dundee. With Largo in the chase for promotion and Holy Cross fighting against relegation this was a vital match for both sides. It was the visitors who started better but a half-century partnership from Dakin and Tocher helped Largo’s cause until they were out in quick succession and Largo were 79 for 4 after 31 overs. Wilson showed his qualities with 3 boundaries but having struck Sharpe for a magnificent 6 he was bowled next ball. Still the innings had now found some momentum and with Nairne playing a minor supporting role to a robust and career best unbeaten 43 from Seath Largo closed their innings after 46 overs at 166 for 5.

The Holy Cross batsmen certainly looked capable of scoring runs but Largo’s two opening bowlers, Seath and Lister, tore through the opposition batting with the aid of some good catching, although one or two chances went down, reducing the Edinburgh side to 44 for 8 after just 19 overs. Skipper Geddes now struck out and found some resilient support from Eberst until Lister induced the latter to slash to point where Wilson took his second sharp catch. Barclay took the credit for the final wicket with a sharp piece of wicketkeeping when he through down the stumps with number 11 Seymour still out of his ground. Seath finished with 6 wickets and Lister 4 (no other Largo player had the opportunity to bowl) to seal Largo’s victory by 101 runs.

With, last weeks visitors, Clackmannan County 2nd XI winning as expected at Mussleburgh Largo had to content themselves with second place less than 1% behind the winners. With 8 wins and 3 draws from their 12 fixtures, however, Largo can be well pleased with their league campaign. All the players have made a contribution at one stage or another throughout the season and all are to be congratulated on this magnificent achievement.
