Amazing win for Largo 2nd XI

Like the phoenix from the ashes Largo 2nd XI rose from a position in which they looked down and out after only 20 minutes to defeat Edinburgh side Morton in an enthralling Division 7 league game played at Mussleburgh on Saturday. A wicket of totally inconsistent bounce meant that Morton skipper George Donald must have been delighted to win the toss and ask Largo to bat first. But his delight must have been even greater when in the eighth over Largo were 9 for 4 with the cream of the batting back in the pavilion. Nairne and Galloway dug in and while runs were hardly to be found they at least prevented further calamities until the 20th over when Galloway was dismissed with the score on 20.  Seath entered the fray and played positively from the start. Although not without a few scares he and Nairne shared a magnificent 6th wicket partnership of 60 until after a third stop for rain Seath was dismissed. Abetted firstly by Fleming and then by Nick Robinson Nairne carried on until the penultimate over and, having staged an impressive recovery, the Largo inning closed soon after on 116 for 9.

Largo were positive from the start of the Morton innings and with his first ball Nairne dived forward to catch the dangerous Cunningham. The Largo bowlers and fielders worked hard to apply pressure and Seath found a beauty to dismiss Donald. Sayer joined the attack and bowled superbly to take 3 wickets in an unchanged 11 over spell. Largo continued to turn the screw even tighter so that when Jones called Turton for a sharp single Nairne threw to the bowlers end where Sayer completed the run out of Morton’s number 3. Nairne then induced Jones to swipe to point and next ball wrapped up the innings, as he had started it, by diving full length to dimiss Bell and complete a quite remarkable turnaround.
