Largo 2nd XI began their league season, following last week’s wash out
against Clackmannan County 2nd XI, with a visit to Edinburgh to play Heriots 4th
XI on Saturday. With some of their juniors completing a school match Heriots
opted to bat first on winning the toss. The Heriots openers started positively
but Hobday, bowling particularly well at this stage, dismissed the aggressive
Geary via the outside edge then the wicketkeeper’s gloves to the safe hands of
Barnes at slip. Largo’s bowling was commendably tight and whenever Heriots did
threaten to take charge the Largo bowlers aided by some fine fielding and
catching tied down the opposition. Guy Robinson took a hat trick of catches
while brother Nick took one at full stretch over his head to dismiss the
promising young talent Short. Not to be outdone father Brent Robinson took four
wickets, as did skipper Nairne. A final total of 117 might have been even less
but for a useful last wicket stand of 23.
Youngsters
Galloway, and the Robinson brothers supported the evergreen Dakin in useful
stands but tight bowling and the difficulty, experienced by both sides, in
reaching the boundary kept the Heriots bowlers interested. When Dakin was
eventually dismissed for the top score of the match, 32, and Nick Robinson fell
immediately afterwards Largo, at 81 for 4, still had some work to do. However,
the experienced middle order triumvirate of Tocher, Barnes and Nairne took
command and saw Largo home to a comfortable 5-wicket victory with 8.5 overs to
spare.
This was a
typically first-class team effort from Largo, with everyone contributing well,
and should put them in good stead for next week’s home encounter against newly
promoted Carlton 3rd XI.
