Largo 2nd XI victory in thrilling run chase

Set a challenging 177 to win by Clackmannan on Saturday in a Division 7 league match sponsored by Pub Refurbishment Largo achieved their target with just 15 balls to spare through a carefully structured approach and some fine batting, none more so than from 18 year-old Nick Robinson.

Earlier in the day Largo had won the toss and asked Clackmannan to bat. The blustery conditions made bowling difficult and with several key bowlers missing Largo’s regular bowlers struggled to contain their opponents, who had only lost for the first time the previous week. However, young Galloway bowled 7 tidy overs and the fielders, notably Doug Smith and wicketkeeper Ryan Wilson, performed admirably. Still with Tranter clubbing 61 and a quick-fire 8th wicket partnership Clackmannan’s target seemed daunting.

The first target of 25 runs in 10 overs was just missed, but 60 was achieved after 20 with Dakin and Barnes batting well and only one wicket lost. In seeking 80 runs after 25 overs Barnes chanced his pace against ladies international Alison Ramsay’s arm and it was victory for the ladies when Ms Ramsay produced a direct hit. Dakin, who had timed the ball beautifully, was bowled behind his legs by opposition skipper Mike Nash for a fine 42 and at 100 for 4 in the 32nd over the odds had swung in favour of the visitors. However, Nick Robinson had other ideas and right from the start took the attack to the opposition treating every bowler the same as he smote the ball ferociously in a rapid 36. When he was finally caught in the deep 12 remained for victory and Sayer joined his captain to guide Largo home to a highly impressive victory.
