A grey day in Edinburgh with a strong wind blowing across a very damp
pitch meant traditional Scottish cricketing weather was back after a glorious
Saturday the previous weekend. On such days winning the toss can be crucial and
Largo 2nd XI skipper Nairne duly obliged for the first time this season and put
Boroughmuir in to bat. Seath and the captain himself bowled a good length and
line to tie down the opposition batsmen and with some first class ground
fielding Largo exerted great pressure. By the thirtieth over Boroughmuir had
scored a mere 40 runs and lost 8 wickets, three to run outs, principally due to
young Galloway. Seath had showed a welcome return to form in taking three
wickets, most notably when he clean bowled the dangerous looking Skidmore.
Another run out after good work from Nick Robinson ended an enterprising ninth
wicket partnership of 40 and Nairne immediately bowled top scorer Davies with
the total on 81.
Largo
found batting no easier and Dakin having already been dropped was soon
dismissed. It was hardly a day for Lister, the pinch hitter, and when Galloway,
who shows increasing maturity, was also dismissed Largo were 17 for 3. However
as a fortnight ago in Edinburgh against Heriots the middle order triumvirate of
Barnes, Tocher and Nairne were ready to steady the ship. Barnes used all his
experience to block or counter attack as appropriate while Tocher batted in his
inimitable cavalier fashion to make a rapid 23. One cavalier shot too many saw
his undoing but Nairne having imperiously pulled his first ball to the
mid-wicket boundary contented himself with keeping Barnes company as they took
Largo to victory. Barnes providing the top score of the match with a chanceless
undefeated 30.
Next week
Largo host newly promoted St Modans 2 and they will be determined to maintain
their 100% record.
